HowTo / Notes

Istaria Install HOWTO

Ubuntu 11.10 and higher steps:

Wine will require some DirectX components.

  1. Open Ubuntu Software Center and install Wine Windows Program Loader (wine1.6). This will install Wine and Winetricks.
  2. Run Winetricks
  3. Click "Select the default wineprefix"
  4. Click Install a Windows DLL or Component
  5. Scroll to vcrun2005, click check box and click OK
  6. Scroll to d3dx9_36, click check box and click OK (this particular version is very important)
  7. Go back to the main window
  8. Click Install a Font
  9. Scroll to corefonts, click check box and click OK
Installing Istaria
  1. Download the Istaria setup.exe from http://www.istaria.com
  2. Right click the setup.exe that you downloaded, click Permissions tab, and make sure the "Allow executing file as program" is checked. Click Close.
  3. Double click setup.exe and install Istaria
  4. If nothing happens, right-click setup.exe and click "Open with Wine...".

Your setup is complete. At this point, you can optionally install Java in Wine (see wineTricks) or make sure that your system is up to date with Java (native to Linux) and update your shortcut to call the Java launcher directly (see Creating a Launcher Script below). If you decide to install Java within Wine, your gameplay shortcut should be jlauncher.exe  This executible is a wrapper for calling Java to run launcher2.jar

Creating a Launcher Script

You may want to setup a desktop script to run the Java launcher directly, instead of having to install Java within Wine. This is the recommended method of running Istaria, but has a small manual step to implement. Create a file on your desktop called istaria.sh - then open the file using a text editor (gedit or vim).

Add the following lines:

cd "/home//.wine/drive_c/Program Files/istaria"

java -jar launcher2.jar

- Gentoo and Tarball Users: Run "wineprefixcreate" as your default user at this stage if you've never done so before. This will create your DirectInput fixups. Ubuntu and Apt-based users need not do this.

Credit to Ranqthas for the original install procedure.

Troubleshooting:

- The game tells me my keyboard and mouse could not be detected and crashes.

Please run wineprefixcreate. If that fails, check your wine version.

- The game randomly crashes after running out of RAM. What's up with that?

Try setting your texture quality a bit lower. This can be found in Options > Video

Errors launching
by Dai Rhys-Jones on Wednesday October 30th 2019, 12:30
Hi everyone,

This is a long shot but I am having serious troubles trying to get Istaria to start up on Mint.
These are what I have so far in screenshots.

Can you re-upload your screenshots please? They look like links to your local files...

Is it possible yet to install and run this game from scratch without touching a Windows machine or VM? The guide above mentions "Mono support" but I can't find instructions on what needs to be done to set that up.

Also, this app's name has apparently been changed to "Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted". Does WineHQ have a procedure for changing app names, or is someone just going to have to create a new app entry?

To answer your first question, yes. I created a tutorial for installation if Istaria without an installation of Windows, which I posted here. I plan to update this AppDB entry with new test data, since this the current entry is very out of date. Istaria may now even qualify as a gold app. When I do so, I'll look into the possibility of renaming the entry.

Err, whoops. I meant to say that I posted that tutorial at community.istaria.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19487

Cool. :)

PS, feel free to continue ownership of this app. I've terminated my account as of a few weeks ago as I no longer log in and play HZ, so this comes at an opportune time.
Works much better now.

This entry is very out of date. I have gotten Horizons to be fully functional using Ubuntu Hardy Heron, using the above procedure, and using winetricks to install dx9. There's just this blasted screen flicker that I'm still working on, but otherwise, it works perfectly for me at 5-10 fps.
And yes, it is under active development once more.

Submit some test data and I'll post it up. :)

by Jacob Strandlien on Wednesday September 17th 2008, 20:06
How do I submit test data? Is there a particular process?
RE: Works much better now.
by Tom on Wednesday September 17th 2008, 20:14
I believe you can "Submit Test Data" outright and then a mod needs to approve it. Which in this case would be me.

Alternately, you can apply for mod rights for this game, but that can take a day or two dependent on the method.

And there I fixed the flicker by disabling Ubuntu's visual effects. This silver game is beginning to take on a gold sheen...
Istaria not working
by Steve on Wednesday May 7th 2008, 17:02
I try using the java launcher and I have all the settings set but i keep getting a already connected error when trying to update characters.

If I use Horizons.exe to launch the game it will load but i see the sky and cant do anything but log out again.

Any help with this ?
Launcher
by Gerry Gunzenhauser on Saturday April 5th 2008, 19:53
Just tried this game myself. To get it to patch and launch I used a java launcher I still had and added wine "support" to it. With this you can patch the game, launch your chars and even create new characters. Hope this helps someone else than me ;) You can download the launcher from horizons.oceth.net/

I still maintain an active account, and yes, they have.

The subscription policy is back in effect as well from nearly a year of "free" downtime, including a gratis 14 day free trial for new and veteran players.
