What works

-Installation (Download of install and patch data requires workaround, will detail below)

-Missions (Some key factors unusable, will detail below)

-Mostly maxed settings (Shaders cause texture flickering, will detail below)

-Every Planet loads and plays the same

-All UI elements (such as action bars, Interface Editor, ect) function correctly (Except for mission POI's as described below)

What does not

-D3DX Shaders cause in-game textures to flicker between high res and low res, with 3-9 sec intervals between the flicker.

-Mission POI circles do not work. (The circles on the map/minimap that tell you what area to find mission items in) And results in a instant game crash if you hover over one, or over a quest in the quest tracker that has a POI active.

What was not tested

-Operations, tho I don't see much problem between them and PvP/Flashpoints/Groups

Hardware tested

  • GPU:
  • Driver:

Additional Comments

Must set Winecfg DLL override for "msls31.dll" to (Native) for the game to load properly. If you do not, you will see the Game UI Elements but the Game world itself will be solid black. Must Download and place it in your Electronic Arts/BioWare/Star Wars - The Old Republic/ folder. Must edit "launcher.settings" file in same, In the line ", "PatchingMode": "{ \"swtor\": \"BR\" }"" change "BR" to "SSN" or the launcher will be unable to download game/patch data. Create a blank file (anywhere will suffice) and copy this into it: #!/bin/bash # Start swtor fix wine "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/BioWare/Star Wars - The Old Republic/swtor_fix.exe" & # Give it's slow ass a moment to load. sleep 2 # Load launcher wine "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/BioWare/Star Wars - The Old Republic/launcher.exe" && killall swtor_fix.exe shift 1 Save the file and make it executable (right-click, permissions, check the box that says "Executable" Use that file to launch the game. (If your wineprefix is not in ~/.wine change that for both lines to whatever it is for you) I have done extensive testing and have determined even in wine, running the game on native windows is far superior at the moment due to the fact that 1. Mission POI's crash the game in Wine and 2. Wine (at least for me and my brother) does not produce game sound, which in a fully voiced MMO is abit of a hassel. Both problems ofc are moot if you are already max level and doing pvp/ops only, or repeatable missions you already memorized. FPS in Wine is about the same (within 5 either way) as Native Win 7 x64

HowTo / Notes

32 bit Required
This game requires a 32-bit Wine prefix. To ensure this is so, prefix all commands with "env WINEARCH=win32", or do "export env WINEARCH=win32" once before running any commands.
Possible Map Crash Bug

With some versions of Wine, the game will crash if icons are hovered over on the main map. Avoid this by keeping the mouse out of the way when viewing the map.

This bug occurs for some players, but not all. I (Scott Weldon) have tested with Wine 1.7.50, and the game did not crash when hovering over icons on the map. However, other users have reported that they are still experiencing the bug. Any help in narrowing down the cause is appreciated.

Running SWTOR
Before running the game, launch swtor_fix.exe (found here) in the background.
