What works

Almost everything!

My wine installation is set to default settings - nothing changed - installed by package manager however, as suggested by another tester, I did install the MSXML library and Windows Installer 2.0 using wine-doors (very simple interface and easy to use).

Sound worked well and instantly despite some others complaining of problems with other versions:

OpenSuse 10.2, I am using emu10k1 drivers with a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS card, using the OSS driver, Hardware emulation enabled.

Graphics are at a great and usable framerate (no exact figures) (using ATI Radeon 9800 (XT/Pro) which is quite old)

All other parts of the program ran fine too. All game modes work fine (Multiplayer not testedyet)

What does not

Not much didn't work

CD PROTECTION DOESN'T WORK - YOU MUST USE A NO CD CRACK! IT APPEARS TO RECOGNISE THE CD AT FIRST BUT DOES NOT START WITHOUT A NO CD CRACK.

The antialiasing on the fonts was terrible - fonts are barely legible on the menu screen but are good enough to use in game.

The mouse cursor doesn't always change to reflect the item you are hovering over such as when you try to garrison units inside a building or such. This can have a negative effect on gameplay (it is not immediately obvious where you can and can't garrison units for example) but is not a large problem overall.

Installer didn't work from CD (it didn't recognise when I put the second CD in as the D: drive simply disappeared when I took out the first disc to put in the second) but worked fine when I copied the contents of both CDs into a folder (I had to rename the folders DATA and data halfway through the install when it asked for Disc 2).

What was not tested

Multiplayer wasn't tested yet. Map editor not tested either.

Additional Comments

Overall very playable and usable when installed and not very difficult to install... Details of DATA and data folders: If you decide to copy the CDs into a folder on the disc, make sure you rename the folder data to data_old for the second half of the installation because as Windows is not case sensitive, it doesn't recognise the difference between the folder DATA and data.

HowTo / Notes

Old Errors/Problems

These errors/problems have been reported on older versions of wine, but are listed here (along with possible solutions) in case they pop up again.

Problem:  Flickering water and/or memory leak
Solution:  Set graphics detail to low and increase your swap size.

Problem:  MS EULA Appears below AoM logo on first launch.
Solution:  Focus the window using the taskbar or Alt+Tab and then use Alt+A to agree.

Problem:  You need MSXML 4.0
Solution:  Use the version included on the install CD.  Type "wine msiexec /i msxml.msi" to install.

Problem:  The installer can't find PidGen.DLL.
Solution:  Copy PidGen.DLL from the installation CD and place it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

HOWTO

AoM installation may require:

* MFC42.DLL

If nothing happens after you click "Next" on the CD Key input screen, you may need this file.

Place the file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.  Add a new override (see below).

Adding an Override

Run "winecfg" from the command line.  Click the "Libraries" tab at the top of the window that appears.

Type the name of the library into "New override for library:" (type "pidgen" for PidGen.DLL).  Click "Add",

make sure that "(native, builtin)" appears next to the library you just added.  If it doesn't highlight the new

override and click "Edit" select "Native then builtin" and click "OK" and finally click "OK".
