Using the GOG release, a GDIPLUS.DLL error is displayed during installation, but using winetricks gdiplus fixes this issue.Â
The game works except sound, unless DirectX 9 is installed with Winetricks (use winetricks dsound).
What does not
Music doesn't work at all on my system, even after Winetricks is used to install DX9.
What was not tested
Hotline Miami, with this configuration, is installable and playable but without music. DSound tends to incur lagged sound playback in GameMaker games. I should probably also point out that my Ubuntu system has an Intel G31 chipset with weak on-board graphics. So even though the game runs, it isn't playable. Anyone using a recent Geforce or Radeon video adapter should have no problems. Even the game was complaining it ran out of video memory!
