What works

-Launcher start up and login
-Character creation
-Character login
-Gameplay using newly and already created characters
-PVP / Legends / Alerts / Duos / Challenges / Operations
-In game marketplace (DBC Coins)
-Switching back and forth between window and fullscreen
-Switching apps works fine

What does not

Since the last time I installed DC Universe Online the Launcher will now not download the game data to install itself. It will update an already installed game, but will not do a fresh install.

Workarounds

To workaround the Launcher issues I installed DC Universe Online via Steam and copied the game's install directory to my wine prefix. I was then able to start the Launcher and finish updating the game. You can also copy your DC Universe Online game directory over form a Windows drive if you have it installed under Windows.

What was not tested

The gamepad configuration in the Launcher's settings. It requires .net 3.5 and just will not work even with it installed.

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

I've played DC Universe Online for hours upon hours under Linux recently with excellent results. I've had very few crashes, about as many as normally when played under Windows. The performance with DXVK is greater than of OpenGL.

I didn't need any extra installs with winetricks. The launcher installed and ran without incident.

For controller support I used SC Controller to emulate a compatible XBOX 360 controller. I've tested with the Steam Controller, XBOX 360 controller, XBOX One controller and a PS4 Controller. All worked as you'd expect. I needed to add each controller manually to the setting of SC Controller and map each button. After this was done I had a functioning controller for DCUO. Pair/plug in your controller and start SC Controller before you start DCUO's launcher. Make sure steam is not running while using SC Controller or it's built in gamepad drivers will take priority over SC Controller. You may also need to disable all gamepads in wine's gamepad control applet except the 'Microsoft X-Box 360 pad' entries. you can access wine's control panels via 'wine control' from terminal and then choose 'Game Controllers'.

Speaking of Steam, playing from steam does not work for me. The built in Proton for SteamPlay will launch DCUO but crashes in game eventually. I wouldn't recommend using it. Note this has nothing to do with wine or wine's developers, I just stated it FYI.
