Everithing but works good only with wine 1.4
What does not
What was not tested
To be able to play online or single by now I have to use wine 1.4.1, in ubuntu 13.10 I did; sudo apt-get install wine1.4 and winetricks directplay Te problem with wine 1.4 is that the game stops working after an online match, and you have to reboot, it was fixed in wine 1.5 but this mod fails to start with wine 1.5 or 1.6 or 1.7 Probably is because it has a fix to use plugandplay unpnp port redirects with the router. Normal Age of empires 2 works fine with wine 1.5 1.6 or 1.7 From other test y copy it here perhaps it fix it on newwer wines... The game works excellent for Singleplayer without adding any new library. If directplay is installed with winetricks, I get the following error when starting the game: Unhandled exception: privileged instruction in 32-bit code (0x7e57d5d5). This can be fixed by disabling the "dpwsockx" library, but there is no support for Multiplayer this way. To play in Multiplayer: - Install directplay with winetricks with the following command: winetricks directplay - Disconnect from any network that you are currently connected. eth0, eth1, and all interfaces must not be connected to a device. - Start the game - While the game is on the main screen, reconnect to the network. - Go back to the game and you are ready to start a Multiplayer match I tested creating and joining a game over LAN (with the other PC running Windows XP) and everything worked fine.

To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:
(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks
and then exec:
It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.
