HowTo / Notes

HOWTO PLAY ONLINE

Multiplayer
To get multiplayer working you have to use by now the directplay libraries from microsoft, still (since 2006) no open source libraries for direct play that include libraries to open sockets and close to play games, so install winetricks:

(in ubuntu/debian) sudo apt-get install winetricks

and then exec:
winetricks directplay

It will download the directplay libraries from microsoft and install them, that's all, tcp/ip will work with direct connect.

Black screen issues

If you get only a black screen upon starting a game

speed
by Leonardo Barichello on Tuesday May 19th 2020, 17:58
Forgotten Empires runs brilliantly in my wine 3.0 running on KDE Neon (Ubuntu 64bits).
However, the game is faster than usual, about 30% faster, and I think this is not intentional.
When I finish a match, the game consistently says it took about 30% than it actually took. I am not sure if this is an issue with wine of the Forgotten Empires expansion, but I would like to restore the speed to its correct value. Any ideas how I could do that?
AoFE directplay culprit
by Derek on Monday May 30th 2016, 14:35
I'm working on a mac (Yosemite) running wine 1.8-rc4

AoFE works extremely well until directplay is installed with winetricks. Directplay allows AoC to work fine though and to flawlessly connect to multiplayer, but on installation it breaks AoFE so that it never reaches the main menu screen.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Run FixAOFE.exe (which is placed in the age2_x1 folder, inside the AOE2 installation folder) and disable Port Forwarding Support. It should work like a charm :D
AOE 2 The Forgotten MULTIPLAYER
by Izequiel on Wednesday June 18th 2014, 6:21
Hi there! Ive got that, version 3...something, with Wine 1.6.2!

Doesnt work, the Multiplayer things only gives me 3 options, "Lobby Browser" "Quick Match" and "Create"
And only the "Lobby browser" runs! The rest gives me the message "you've been dropped out of the game"

Ive tried to run the DirectPlay as it said on the website, no difference!

Any idea how can I run it through LAN?

Thanks!

Hey there, did you ever get your LAN going? I'm looking for an answer!
graph issue in wine 1.6
by Andrew on Monday July 22nd 2013, 16:28
It worked flawlessly on 1.4.1 but now in the new final 1.6 I can see only the quarter of the screen when I start the game.
If I emulate a virtual desktop for it the whole screen will be visible but in full resolution the position of the game is incorrect, the top is off the screen and i can see my Ubuntu desktop at the bottom.
