What works

Origin is now working pretty well under wine, I was able to play dead space2 and purchase dead space 3 with Origin.  DXVK is probably required to run origin since their game client uses DX11.  I can tell this because the DXVK HUD appears on the client as well as the pull downs when purchasing a game. This, however is not dead space 3

Dead space 3 is pretty temperamental to get running.  I've found that I'll need to start Origin, then launch dead space 3, wait for dead space 3 to crash, kill dead space 3 and origin, then start origin again and finally launch dead space 3.  But launching is not running.

Once dead space 3 launches, the splash screen comes up and if left untouched, the dead space intro video plays.  But the video isn't playing.

Shortly after launching the splash screen says "Hit any key" and once a key is poked, an animation comes up in the center of the screen saying "Scanning for downloadable content" and this is where the game stays for all eternity (well minutes until I kill the process)  The sound doesn't stop and the splash screen moves around in the background but the game never proceeds from "Scanning for downloadable content".  I tried the game under windows (yuck) and it just bopped past the "scanning for downloadable content" and went right into the game.   I contacted EA support and eventually got to the point where they wanted me to run msinfo and dxdiag which I can't do under wine.

What does not

Getting past the "scanning for downloadable content".  I suspect there is more going on than just scanning for downloadable content, the terminal from whence I launched the game displayed "fixme:netprofm:list_manager_GetConnectivity 0x1139160, 0x33c060" whiich I took to mean that ds3 was probably trying to call home for some reason.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Everything past the "scanning for downloadable content".

Additional Comments

Perhaps one of the maintainers would like to revisit this game and might have some useful input.  I read that this has happened to some windows users, it was tied to installing the game from a different drive letter than origin was on.

Hive Mind boss glitched out
by Andrew on Friday March 1st 2019, 2:57
I just can't seem to get this working.

I've tried wine 4.1 protonified and I had the death loop checkpoint bug (which was annoying but workable), then when I got to chapter 13, the hive mind completely disappears mid-fight. I've tried this with and without vsync and it happens every single time. I installed wine 2.0 staging like someone mentioned below and the same thing happened every single time with and without vsync.

At this point I don't even care about beating the boss. I just want to move on to the second half of the game, but I'm stuck. Has anyone had any success with this? Maybe there's a way to edit the save to just put me past it?
Bug just before chaper 13

Just before Chapter 13 starts, there is a boss fight with a big bug that tries to suck the player inside it. The thing is that on wine, this fight is bugged.

After shooting this thing in its exposed heart (yellow thing) it's supposed to fall a bit and start sucking air inside it. On wine, the bug appears to just fall off the cliff-side entirely and there is no way to finish the fight.

I tried the same save file on my Win7 install and the fight worked as it should have.

This YT video shows what boss fight I'm talking about:

If you can get the game running, the boss fight is fine now.

Oh, this interesting. Which version of wine have you tested this with?

I just finished the entire game. Started playing with 1.7.34, but most of the game was completed under 1.7.35.

Note that the game has to be cracked, or it crashes during the title screen. It never used to do this AFAICT, but I suspect the application was updated via Origin at some point to cause this regression.

It's also worth noting that changes to deadspace3.exe cause changes to the save game format, such that they are no longer compatible. ie. a crack that replaces deadspace3.exe will not create/load save games which were created with the original deadspace3.exe, or even deadspace3.exe modified by a different crack! I was ~40% of the way through the game (played it ages ago), but had to start over from scratch (in a different save game slot) to use a crack just to get it running.

Additionally, there were some parts of the game where automatic loading of a check point upon death did not work - I would get a light blue screen and then I was automatically dead again before I could even see anything. This would loop indefinitely, so I would have to exit out of the game to the menu and manually load a save. As the save points are different to the check points (and unfortunately far less frequent), this worked. Just try not to die too often because there's way too much back tracking required due to this issue. No idea if it's a DS3 issue, an issue with the crack I was using, or a problem with Wine... but it was annoying as heck.

Oh yeah, I did run into that bug once. I was "investigating" the internal parts of one of those big necro things. Died and then I got this same loop of reloading and then being dead without being able to actually play. I had to restart the mission :) (it's one annoying mission too)

Ahh, I know the one you mean.

I've just opened a bug report.

So do you know if it is at all possible to play co-op through origin?
RE: Gameplay Video
by Xpander on Monday February 18th 2013, 3:20
not yet.
until origin problems are solved
RE: Gameplay Video
by Sazex on Monday February 18th 2013, 18:13
What exactly are the origin problems?
Because for me the origin application works(somewhat), it's just when I try to download games/demos from the store, the download speed is unbearably slow, but if I can download the Dead Space 3 files from somewhere else and put it in the origin download, and if I can get the game to start through origin, would I be able to play online like that?

I have played Co-op with a friend via Origin on Wine.
