Install works but launching gives an error immediately with Patcher. I can provide the details if someone would like to review. I tried with nothing in the PREFIX and with installing one, testing, installing the next updates listed in the install guide below.

(12/9/2016) - Need to install Glyph now. Glyph installs well and works. As for Defiance, if using Wine-staging 1.9.23 it will work for a bit and give the connection to server failed mention. I caould play 9 or so minutes and put the video on my YouTube page.

The local port keeps changing in almost every capture.

The ip belongs from TRION WORLD, which I assume to be the login server.

Any thoughts?

Failed to parse configuration file

I removed the Defiance PREFIX and attempted to install again. Now I receive Failed to parse configuration file. Patcher does not even launch. Also, for some reason, I had to create an ISO image of the DVD to install.

I received "D:\\Setup.exe": Bad EXE format. I have installed from /media/DEFI\ NA\ Mar\ \'13/setup.exe before numerous times. Another item is the desktop icon is not created on this new bout. I tried 1.6rc2 and 1.5.31 with same results.

I checked around and found a suggestion to change install location. Same error. I reviewed the syfypatch.xml file and tried to open some of the web sites listed. Some gave 404 errors.

At this point, Garbage is the rating. Thoughts?

Still garbage rating but with the transition to glyphy the game installs and launches fine but I get a message about being unable to talk to the game servers.

Same issue. Looking at traffic capture, it doesn't look like anything is being blocked. But the patcher seems to tear down the session as soon as it is established. No authentication happens and it kicks up the error code.

The patcher updated and now errors saying "HTTP Response Code 0" when I try to log in. Trion's site says the error has to deal with the patcher being blocked by anti-virus software but obviously that isn't my case. Any ideas?

I restored an older Patcher.exe file from my backup, deleted Patcher.log, and now the Patcher is patching. Please download the file from if you do not have an older Patcher.exe file available. My download speed keeps changing, sitting at 5 hours now, so I figured if some others attempted perhaps they would achieve a higher download speed and report back sooner. :)

This did semi-work. It claims update fails with the patcher update but let's me log in and enter the game. But yes I get the same Critical error about Defiance not being available. Annoying since just before this patch I was able to get into the game and play fine, albeit with a pretty terrible framerate.

I tried this and it got me a login but no game - just the usual unavailable error cycle.

On the Defiance forums, a couple individuals noted that this was "fixed" by starting the Workstation service. I'm not sure how that would translate to Wine.

I am not sure how that would work for us. I am attempting a new install in a new PREFIX. I will report my findings. I found a thread on Trion's forum where the person uninstalled Defiance, then deleted every reference to Trion and Defiance in the registry, then reinstalled after a reboot. That fixed the error for that person. So, a new PREFIX is basically starting from scratch. :)

Yeah - I now have several PREFIX set up as I toy with this issue. One even has the old patcher with the immutable bit set to ensure it can't upgrade. :)

Not getting anywhere with this though. And woah - a fresh new wave of people having this issue popping up on the thread! I feel their pain.

Yes, it appears I should create an entry for Garbage as I have not found a way around the HTTP response code 0. And, since I did see many others, including X-Box users, receiving the same, the game is unstable in general. Or, the patcher is unstable.

It seems the game needs to use Services.msc via the patcher to Authenticate Windows Updates and make sure it isn't being blocked via WIndows firewall. I'll make the assumption since it isn't even implemented we won't be able to play until such feature could be bypassed entirely.

Is there a bug for this currently via another app that produces the same type of error because of not even having such file in WINE?

I managed to sort my issues by installing texture compression support libtxc_dxtn and lib32-libtxc_dxtn.

Now I have been able to play the game but am getting frequent server disconnects just as reported already.

I managed to fix this myself. I was incorrectly using gdiplus for Windows 7 and needed to replace this with gdiplus for XP.
Black screen

Having issues with the launcher just showing a black screen is this a recent issue with the latest update or you guys not having any problems ? will keep messing around with it but if u guys know a work around for the problem let me know ... im using a clean prefix with suggested programs installed, ive tried with steam version and normal version which are the same anyways :S using nvidia gtx650 with latest drivers

If you alt-tab through, or click the Wine icon in your Unity bar (or wherever running apps reside for you), you can get the text to show up. I do not know how to fix it. See for a video on it.

cause i use e17 for my dm i couldnt use alt tab it did nothing but can go into menu>windows and click on the top defiance entry and it will show up the text thanks for the tip patching the game now

Im able to login and patch the game and it starts up but after the "movie" phase it just says "The defiance service is unavailable please try again later". Anyone got any solution to this? (game is working from my windows PC so it aint the servers)

I can play for five to ten minutes, sometimes longer, then receive Critical error, servers unavailable. I have tried setting winhttp and wininet to native. Did not make a difference. Also, if you read the Defiance forums, disconnections like this are seen by many people. I will keep tinker with it, but I feel the rating may move down if no solution is found.

Did you ever get anywhere figure out this error? Since the launcher got switched over to use Glyph, the game will patch and launch now without error but I still run into this problem once I get past the intro videos.

I am having the same issue.

Have turned on all debug for winsock and dug through the log. I see it create a socket and connect to port 50000. After that there's a handful of failed setsockopt calls for send and recv buffer sizes followed by a series of select and WSAFDIsSet calls waiting for socket activity, and finally shutdown and closesocket.

I've tested the connectivity using nc and was able to connect to port 50000. I have yet to try wireshark or similar but may resort to that at some point. Other suggestions welcome.
