Additional Comments

My steps to get it starting up: 1. winetricks dotnet20 dotnet30 dotnet35 d3dx9 2. Installed via Steam, killed .NET installer, Uplay starts up and hangs at doing updates. 3. winetricks crypt32, removed global crypt32 override and added it only for Uplay.exe 4. Uplay starts up, the game crashes. Disabled overlay in the Uplay settings. 5. winetricks dxdiagn, the game starts up and runs :)

HowTo / Notes

Steps to get it working
The game has been tested by me to work very good with Wine 1.7.43 - versions below of that have produced various problems. Make sure to use the latest wine.
  • Before installing the game through Steam, the .NET installer inside of the game directory has to be removed. It will hang and possibly trash the wineprefix.
  • Afterwards, run winetricks mwo=enabled d3dx9 dxdiagn
  • Open up winecfg and set d3d11.dll to Disabled

The game will run now. UPlay's online save feature will not work, though.

1.9 Series
by Lampros Liontos on Tuesday August 30th 2016, 22:58
If you are using one of the 1.9 series of Wine, do not install anything using winetricks. They are not needed, as the Built-in Wine libraries will work.

This is especially the case with "dxdiagn"; if it is installed using winetricks, it will cause UPlay to crash with the error "Unhandled exception: unimplemented function setupapi.dll.CM_Get_Child called in 32-bit code" when launching the game.

To save time and prevent problems, deleting the DirectX and .NET installers from the game directory is still recommended.

If sound freezes and stutters, use winecfg to change all audio settings to "pulseaudio"; this seems to allow the sound to run, although there will likely still be some stutter.

You are probably running a newer WINE version than the person in the test. That's why you can run the game.

The game needs a lot of overrides to run. I added a solution in my latest test.
