What works
Apart from the DirectPlay DLLs (see below), I had no problems at all. Played the game in single player and multiplayer (over LAN), with exprimental resolution and 3D acceleration. I didn't seem to have any performance issues.
What does not
Playing with wine's DirectPlay implementation, I needed to install the official DirectX ones.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Playing through the game (though I've done it before, in older versions).
I didn't test the experimental OpenGL DirectDraw renderer (the wine one, not to be confused with the game's accelerated mode).
Hardware tested

Additional Comments
Requires you to override the DirectPlay DLLs to make sure it uses the native (windows) ones. I know I used to have problems with the OpenGL direct draw mode, though I didn't bother with testing it now.

Multiplayer can work, but requires some setup first.
The problem is with the current DirectPlay implementation. Read here how to set it up: http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames
To get multiplayer working for games that use a DirectPlay version prior to 8, place the following DLLs:
dplayx.dll, dpnet.dll, dpnhpast.dll and dpwsockx.dll in this archive in WINE's windows/system32 directory, then add DLL overrides (native, builtin) with WINECFG.
