Due to Bug 32451 (and to avoid native gdiplus for Wine 1.4) the setup has be run with the /nogui option: $ wine setup_jade_empire_126.96.36.199.exe /nogui To start the JadeEmpireConfig.exe I had to create an empty data/SystemInformation.xml (however, the tool failed to save the settings on exit): $ cat /dev/null > data/SystemInformation.xml $ wine JadeEmpireConfig.exe Since the Config tool did not work on my system and the game did not start in full screen mode (might be related to the fact that the screen has only one resolution at 1920x1080_60.00 that is not detected by the application), I had to manually create/modify the JadeEmpire.ini in the application directory to set the screen resolution + refresh rate: [Render] ScrW=1920 ScrH=1080 RefreshRate=50 Widescreen=1 Windowed=0 VertexOpt=0 [Game] ClampFPS=0 Windowed=1 enables the windowed mode (default is 0). Widescreen allows to change the aspect ratio (default is 0). VertexOpt=0 disables vertex compression to avoid graphical artifacts (default is 1). ClampFPS=0 disables the frame rate limit (default is 1).
