The cause of the Gstreamer plugin bug (as well as the black screen for stages 1-3 of previous versions) is the background of stages 1-3 which, unlike the rest of the stages, use looped movies rather than image rendering. This was discovered when practice stage 4 had no problems but stages 1-3 did. Also, this version should be run in Japanese Locale to prevent mangled text.
