Create an $TEMPDIR eg. ~/doom3 Copy the full contents of CD1 to $TEMPDIR. Copy all $CD2/Setup/Data/base files to the $TEMPDIR/Setup/Data/base directory. Copy all $CD3/Setup/Data/base files to the $TEMPDIR/Setup/Data/base directory. Now Copy cdkey.dll & cdkeydll.ini from $TEMPDIR/Setup/rsrc to $TEMPDIR and execute the setup.exe in wine

A native version of this application exists for GNU/Linux.
if installing from the 3 cd set there is a chance that it wont install all the files or even ask from disk's 2 and 3
use the following command or similar to copy the missing files (from cd2 and 3) to the doom 3 directory
cp -av /media/cdrom/Setup/Data/base/pak00* ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Doom 3/base
use the patch from ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom3/win32/DOOM3-1.3.1.exe
to update to 1.3.1 - the game will work without the cd's

Why is this important? Because the Quake 1 .map files were released under the GPL and could be converted to work with the engine if there were a way to convert q1 brush primitives to d3 brush primitives.

2) Some people (like I use to) like to have the saftey of "fallback compatibility" If you go and buy the linux version, and you go back to windoze, you are stuck with a game you can't play anymore.. If you buy the windows version, you can play it in windows or linux.
I always use to do this, "just in case"

theres no linux version of Doom 3 you can 'buy'. in order to play this natively on linux, you must download the linux client from ID's website, then copy the 'pack' files from a windows or mac installer CD. see here: zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ for details. you can even do it the same way for the mac and windows versions... just download the appropriate client from their website, and copy the 'pack' files into the right place.
id software appears to genuinely care about ALL it's customers, not just just those on windows... hence their unique setup. What this means for id fans is that if you buy the game, no matter what platform you want to play it on, you'll never be stuck in a situation with a useless disk, or having to go out and buy a new copy.
Just thought I'd share that...
