WineHQ

MissionForce: Cyberstorm

This is the original, out-of-the-box version of Cyberstorm.

The installer for the game works without issue, except for the tests designed to determine if your system meets the requirements. These can be safely skipped, along with any warnings that come with them.

The problem most people have encountered that prevents them from starting the game is the "unable to create a surface" error during startup. This is an error that occurs both in Wine and native windows, and is a result of the game being unable to run in a 16/24 bit display environment. Configuring your display to run with 8-bit color depth (256 colors) should allow the game to start normally.

Additional Comments

Running inside PlayOnLinux Using Window98 under winecfg Running inside a Xephyr nested X display with 8bpp color depth (avoid earlier noted "unable to create surface issue). Installed via copying CSTORM folder off CDROM directly and launching CSTORM.exe directly. ----- Opening video plays sound but no image Main menu only successfully draws a lower "status" bar that reflects the current mouse-hovered selection. Even this bar is rendered in incorrect colors (lots of magenta, teal and neon yellow). The menu "glitch" allows selection and progression into game play (I successfully started a single player campaign, as well as a Quick Encounter (I could even select HERCs, it seemed)). --- Needs a solution for correct rendering under 8bpp color depth.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
This game needs to be run in 256 colour mode on both Windows and Linux. If you configure X to run in 8bpp it will start instead of crashing.
