What works

  • Installation.
  • The launch window which appears when the application is executed.
  • The logo movies (Bink) which appear after the option for "play" is selected from the above-mentioned window.
  • Starting the game or tutorial (if you know which item to select from the menu, as the text is illegible).
  • Sounds.
  • Music.
  • Saving and loading game.

What does not

  • Reading the on-screen text in menus.
  • Playing the game: In-game objects appear out-of-shape and colour. (Shader problem?).
  • Shadows: They appear polygonal.
  • Flags/banners: Some of them are blank (white).

Workarounds

What was not tested

Additional Comments

I have an on-board Intel graphics controller. I avoided installing the bundled DirectX (and it is not really needed)! Running it in "DirectX 9" mode causes the game to crash: RGL Error. The crash can be avoided by setting `MaxShaderModelVS' to 0 in the registry: $ wine reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D" /v MaxShaderModelVS /t REG_DWORD /d 0 Running it in "DirectX 7" mode does not cause the game to crash. The problem of illegible text can be solved by enabling DXTn (S3TC): $ force_s3tc_enable=true wine mb_warband.exe The problem of polygonal shadows (seen when traveling on the world map) and blank flags can be solved by dropping `d3dx9_42.dll' in the game directory. The DLL also seems to solve the problem of blank (white) flags/banners. In full-screen mode, the application automatically minimizes when the workspace in the WM is changed. Anti-aliasing cannot be altered. Sometimes, I find the environments too dark. Then, disabling dynamic lighting solves the problem. I also find it better to change the gamma (from the configuration file).

HowTo / Notes

Low FPS Solution
If you're getting low FPS with Warband, try the following: Enable single threading. Open the "~/.wine/drive_c/users/your_user_name/My Documents/Mount&Blade Warband/rgl_config.txt" (change the path to reflect your Warband installation) configuration file and set "force_single_threading" attribute to 1.
