Additional Comments

The GOG installer is broken. If you try to install the game through it, you will get a broken install with no debug information to go off. The PCGamingWiki page for the game suggests extracting the installer with innoextract instead but I have had no success doing that, it lead to the same problem.
To get the game running perfectly with the GOG release I had to install through Windows 10. My initial suspect was that the game broke with a newer WINE, but when I tried the version I installed through WINE on Windows 10 the game didn't even run. After reinstalling through Windows, the game actually started, so you may be able to play through WINE at this point but I did not test. I went straight to setting up the native 32bit Linux binaries by following the PCGW page for the game.
