Installing the game works fine if you run Wine in 32-bit mode. (Otherwise the installer crashes.) Note that you can do this even if your OS is 64-bit (see comments below).
If one uses a patched .exe file that removes the copy protection (see comments below), the game works perfectly. I have manged to complete the entire game using Wine, with no problems whatsoever.
What does not
The copy protection (but see comments below for information on how to fix this).
What was not tested
I use a 64-bit OS, and when running Wine in 64-bit mode (the default), the installer crashes. To fix this, run the following commands before launching the installer: export WINEARCH=win32 export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 For 32-bits OSs, this won’t be necessary. When the installer for DirectX starts, cancel it. Installing DirectX is *not* needed for running the game (and may be detrimental?); Wine’s native DirectX implementation works perfectly, and no DLL overrides are needed. After the installer has finished, do not launch the game; the copy protection stops it from working. To fix this, I used a patched .exe downloaded from https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20004289/TLJ/dreamfall.zip (link found at http://forums.longestjourney.com/showthread.php?t=8615). This file may also be avaiable from other Web sites. For the record, the MD5 hash of the extracted ‘dreamfall.exe’ file from the above URL is 8b4b6bd76b4959d373d6e1019b1fa8be. I believe the file will work for *all* versions of the game, not just the Norwegian version. Copy the extracted .exe file into ~/.wine32/drive_c/Program Files/Funcom/Dreamfall, overwriting the existing .exe file. Running the file should now launch the game. I have experienced that the game sometimes leaves a ‘dreamfall.exe:’ file (yes, with a trailing colon) in the ‘Dreamfall’ folder, and this stops the game from launching. Deleting the file and replacing ‘dreamfall.exe’ with the patched file mentioned above fixes this. To avoid any problems, always use a script like this to launch the game: cd ~/.wine32/drive_c/Program\ Files/Funcom/Dreamfall rm -f dreamfall.exe: cp -f /path/to/patched/gamefile/dreamfall.exe . wine dreamfall.exe The first time the game is launched, the graphics resolution may not match the desktop/monitor resolution. Go to settings screen and change both the aspect ratio and the resolution to fix this. Feel free to increase all graphics options to max; all modern graphics card should be able to handle this. (I run the game in a 1920 × 1080 resolution with all settings to max on a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450.) After changing some settings, I got a warning that the settings could not be changed, so I had to quit and reapply all settings to make them stick. Now just play the game, and enjoy! :)
