What works

Instalation

Basic sound output with the default configuration (ALSA driver and pulseaudio running) with no glitches whatsoever

Access to the upper menus such as file and help. Was a known issue with previous versions of wine

Manual detection of midi input. Working out of the box with a M-Audio keystation 49e

Playing of demo song reveals that pretty much everything else is working

No graphical glitches in the rack or in reason transport

Remote override mode

Doesn't seem to crash much

etc etc...

What does not

On the first run it will try to install the refills that come in the 2 extra cds and having them mounted normally reason will still not detect them. It is necessary for the drive to have the correct serial and label, for which I offer a solution in a follow-up comment bellow

Auto-detect midi interfaces

Buttons in the sequencer have a coloured instead of a transparent background (like in the screenshots) but seriously, who cares

Sometimes there's strange behavior in window management, with some window that should be on top suddenly going to the back, but again no big deal

Although with no major glitches, there are several problems with the graphics:

-the rack freezes often during playback and is usually slow. So, for instance, following the levels of the different channels in the mixer is impossible.

-Sometimes when clicking on a button to change the tempo, for instance, the mouse glues to the button and makes the incrementing impossible to control.

-The sequencer runs slowly an freezes, making it impossible to follow what notes are being played.

Audio latency is a big problem. To get it down to a level where playing in the keyboard is acceptable, one must reduce the number of samples to somewhere around 2000. This produces a sound output with glitches so it's not really usable.

Sometimes will refuse to quit, hanging on the console, and has to be killed directly.

Workarounds

What was not tested

I tested almost everything, and I think it's very safe to assume that everything kind of works. The slowness in the graphics and the latency issue are the dominating problems.

Additional Comments

The rating will be bronze instead of silver because of the slowness and latency renders the program useless on the long run for recording and production, but it can achieve part of it's objective because of the seemingless playback. I will try to do further testing with ubuntu studio, for example, because I remembered it had a low latency kernel that can maybe tackle the problem. Further implementation of a DIB engine will in due time solve the graphical slowness. The program still doesn't run perfect but at least it's progressing quite nicely. I was very happy to get this running, although I can't still ditch the windows partition, I won't have to use it so often. And btw, I completely ruined my audio by following this tutorial http://blog.paulbetts.org/index.php/2007/05/27/make-wine-and-pulseaudio-get-along/ so I wouldn't recommend trying it out

HOWTO: Tips regarding Reason Errors
by Tobias on Monday November 6th 2006, 13:32

1. - if you get the error

"failed to open gui support library"

use winecfg to switch the windows-version to "windows xp".

2. - if you've got troubles with the "Factory Sound Bank"-CD and
the "Orkester Sound Bank"-CD at the first run of Reason, you
should make iso image-copies of the cd's, copy them wherever
you want, mount the iso-images, open winecfg and add the mount-
points as drives in the "Drives"-section.

3. - right-click on the "Enter Serial" and "Waiting for CD.." window-bars in the task-bar and use the move-function to get
the windows to front (they are actually covered by the reason-
splash-screen.

Please make sure your version of Wine is up to date. --MK
