Installed from retail disc, then updated to 1.01 with the patch from the game developer site.
Needs native quartz.dll and devenum.dll for FZA.exe (the main game), otherwise it will crash right at startup, when it attempts to play the opening video. Since the video is WMV, you will need to install Windows Media codecs for it (look for wmfdist.exe)
After dealing with that (hint: winetricks is your friend), game runs flawlessy (at least the first stage plays OK), if a bit choppy at times depending on your video drivers (tested with Mesa 9.2.2 on a Intel HD3000)
What does not
What was not tested
1) winetricks quartz AND winetricks devenum (or at least get native quartz.dll/devenum.dll and add a override for both in FZA.exe) is a must. Otherwise, don't bother. 2) Game must be run from within a Japanese locale (LANG=ja_JP.UTF8 "/path/to/FATAL ZERO ACTION.exe". Remember, this game lives in a Shift-JIS world.
