Additional Comments

The installer needs libxml to run properly. If you're on a 64 bit system, you need the 32 bit libxml. Alternatively, you can probably just unpack the installer manually and run the executable inside of it, but I didn't bother. If you're using a third party assistant (AssistUO/UOSteam), make sure to have vcrun2010 and run in an emulated desktop, or the client will crash.

HowTo / Notes

Problems with mouse
This can be solved for some clients by setting "MouseThread=off" in every uo.cfg (there are many for each character and one global).
Problems running uo.exe
You can safely use client.exe for the game and run uopatch.exe from time to time manually.
Connecting to free shards
You have to disable encryption for your client:
  1. Either you can find already patched client for your shard (browse the shard forums). And you can run it like the normal one (tested by Plague).
  2. Or you can patch the client yourself using UO Rice (some say this can be only done on Windows and before any patching) and then run the patched client. (suggested by sk8dork, not tested by Plague).

For any third-party software and tools, please use their own AppDB entry.
(The same goes for any comments posted here.)

If you think there should be any other software listed, please let me know.

Crashing/corruption of the client
by hifi on Tuesday February 7th 2017, 12:49
On Windows you can get a low virtual memory warning or error when starting the game which is a bug in the game itself. On Wine, you don't get such thing and the game starts anyway. This can lead to random crashes or corruption while playing in situations where the game would use more memory like player towns with large houses with a lot of items.

Suggested way to work around this issue on Windows is to force the executable (client.exe) to be Large Address Aware. It's a hack but it seems to work just fine on Wine as well.

Using external programs like UOSteam might make this problem more apparent and frequent on Wine as it will inject itself to the address space of client.exe.

System: debian 8.2 (64 bits)
Client: Classic Client

Problem: received message "Cannot open 'fonts.mul'."

Tested with wine 1.6.2 and wine-development 1.7.29.

PS.: you can install wine stable and wine-development on Debian Jessie. To install development use "sudo aptitude install wine-development".

Forget. I fixed it.

Double-click doesn't work, but in terminal it works:

"wine client.exe"

No quotes. Just it.
