What works

  • Fresh install.
  • Upgrade (5.8.16 --> 6.6.38 --> 7.0.64 --> 7.2.33 --> 7.2.42 --> 7.4.36).
  • Upgrading 5.8.16 --> 7.4.36.
  • CPU details correctly identified.
  • Proxy detected from environment.
  • 2x SETI@Home Beta WU completed (failing validation on all platforms).
  • SETI@Home WU completed and validated.
  • Uninstall, though it claims to be upgrading.

What does not

  • SETI@Home graphics, though probably due to X over SSH session.
  • Priority (niceness) not set.
  • boincmgr takes far too long to connect.
  • Printing the license agreement fails and wordpad remains in memory. This has the side effect of having to manually simulate a reboot (wineboot -r) or BOINC will not start. wordpad remains in memory after simulated reboot.
  • Service install.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • SIMAP (project temporarily unavailable).
  • GPU crunching (no GPGPU available).
  • Attaching to project manager.
  • Virtualbox.

Additional Comments

Upgrading 5.8.16 --> 7.4.36 directly doesn't report the upgrade in the log (stdoutdae.txt), though the installer says it is upgrading. The directory structures change in Windows between these versions so that might explain it. Tested running X over SSH. No overrides. BOINC 7.0.64 & 7.4.36. SETI@home v7 7.00 windows_intelx86

HowTo / Notes

BOINC is available for your platform

BOINC is available for a wide array of platforms, and a lot of platforms are supported by the projects. You are probably better off asking a project to support your platform than using Wine to translate Windows calls.

It should be possible to use a native BOINC and run a Windows executable with Wine if absolutely necessary.

Test results for BOINC are still welcome as they help developers with Wine.
