Additional Comments

Working as per instructions for previous wine 1.7.x versions. Required running with WINEARCH=win32 WINPREFIX=~/.winedir wine /path/to/Binaries/Win32/Borderlands2.exe -NoLauncher Worked very well for about 6 hours and several launches. At some point i accidentally hit ctrl+enter and the game went into windowed mode. from this point on after any keyboard input the game would cause a crash. I re validated the content in steam and tried various driver overrides, received reference errors on the controle and managed to see a wine dialog with an error immProcessKey() : file not found, reference errors on every attempt to enter any key press. There doesn't seem to be any clear information on this error after a day of googling.

HowTo / Notes

Launcher crash

2015-04-20 Admin note: the following was extracted from user comment made in 2014 and may not be relevant to current Wine.

Launcher crash can be avoided by launching game executable instead of launcher. Need to rename borderlands.exe into launcher.exe.
