What works

  • Starting and Quitting the Game.
  • Starting a New Game.
  • Saving and Loading a Game.
  • Quick Saving.
  • Skipping text for 10+ seconds.
  • Fullscreen and Windowed Settings.
  • Changing the Font.
  • In Game Voices and Sound Effects.

What does not

  1. English Patch Font is Wonky (Not unreadable, but definitely problematic).
  2. Some (MPEG-1 encoded?) in-game movies refuse to play.
  3. Full Screen mode refuses to be sent to the Background on Alt-Tab.

Workarounds

  1. English Patch Text is fixed through changing which font is used in the in-game settings to a non-proportional font. I used `mplus-2m` from the `mplus-fonts` package, and it works great.
  2. Skip playing the problematic in-game movies (see Extra Comments for details).
  3. Play in Windowed mode, or use a WM that has virtual desktops and give it one by itself.

What was not tested

Extended Play of the Game (will edit/submit new tests once I've done so).

Additional Comments

This game requires a Japanese locale, even during installation or with an English Patch installed. Run all wine calls like

 WINEPREFIX=<wherever-Your-prefix-is> LC_ALL="jp_JP.UTF-8" winecfg

to achieve this without changing Your global locale config. Alternatively, before starting, You can export LC_ALL="jp_JP.UTF-8" instead.

Upon getting to the opening movie, You are asked which codec You want to use for movies. On a 64-bit prefix, You should choose the top one (MCI) because You will not have Windows Media Player installed (it doesn't work well anyway). But, You should also choose not to play the videos at all by clicking the left button (neither of them display their text correctly on my machine). Pressing the right button usually results in a  core dump, but sometimes causes the game to hang indefinitely, which is really annoying in full screen because the game refuses to relinquish focus on Alt-Tab.

Some people have reported limited success using `winetricks quartz devnum ffdshow` or some derivative to make the movies that won't play work. I have not been able to confirm this on my machine. I've also tried installing all available gstreamer plugins, both 32 and 64 bit, and even a few extra codecs that have supposedly worked for other Japanese games. No success yet (will edit if I find a solution).
