Finale 2012; released: October 2011
Adds ScoreManager™, unicode text support, creation of PDF files, an updated setup Wizard, improved sound management and more Garritan sounds built-in.
All editing tools, loading, saving and printing all work well. To create PDFs, I have Finale print to a file, give the file a name like "/home/user/mysong.ps", then use the "ps2pdf" tool to convert the .ps file to a PDF. MIDI in/out works great. I usually have Finale output MIDI to a running instance of Qsynth (with GM-compatible SoundFont loaded), since Finale's internal audio and synths don't seem to work very consistently under Wine.
What does not
I sometimes can't get any sound out of Finale's built-in synths and Garritan Personal Orchestra, so I don't even bother. I haven't tried lately, but just opt to route Finale's MIDI-out to Qsynth instead (see above).
Depending on your Wine version and CPU speed, you may run into sluggish behavior:
Wine 1.4: GUI speed is a little sluggish, but can be improved by switching the background graphics (page texture, background gradient) to solid colors in the preferences.
Wine 1.6 or later: There is a regression that causes Finale's GUI to hang up quite terribly (several seconds at a time) whenever object handles are drawn. More info can be found in the bug report below.
Also in Wine 1.6 or later, starting Finale for the first time after installation fails to create the needed user files, and you will get the error message: "Finale 2012 cannot start the Wizard because a necessary data file (Maestro Font Default.FTM) could not be found."
The only workaround I know is to install Finale and run it once using Wine 1.4, then upgrade to Wine 1.6 or later.
Update: I have created a version of Wine 1.7.17 that is patched to work with Finale 2012. Please note that these packages will only work with Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) and have only been tested on a 64-bit system. The patches may also have negative effects on other Windows software running in Wine. If you aren't comfortable dealing with potential broken package scenarios, then you shouldn't install these packages. Download here.
You use these packages at your own risk! I will not be responsible if you hose your system installing these packages. Installation instructions are included in the archive. If you prefer to patch and compile Wine yourself, the patches are included in the download as well.
What was not tested
I think I tested almost everything.
