What works

Nothing works without the workarounds

I installed this game on a Windows PC and then took the folder and copied it to my mac.

I have not tried installing through mac, I believe others have done that and it worked as well.

What does not

The game runs well for LAN. I haven't tested online play as the purpose of getting this was to play with a mac as LAN and be able to play with a windows user.

Follow the usual instructions of getting the extras to run the game properly;
d3dx9, quartz, mfc42, l3codecx, msxml4,

There are many good instructions out there for where to get these files and placing them in the system 32 folder etc,
To access the windows directory, open a wine/terminal window and write this command:  Open $HOME/.wine

For me, the problem was that I forgot to INSTALL -.-.......... direct x 9 on my mac. its important to actually RUN the directx exe install, then you will be able to run the game properly without black screen and visual errors.

Another error is compatibility, if your game opens then minimizes, this is most likely a compatibility issue. To solve this;

Open Wine and type "winecfg" after the config window appears, go to the application window and press "add application" add the age3.exe file from the Age Of Empires III folder,
(good to put this folder in the) "Drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age Of Empires III/ " which is found in the windows directory I mentioned above.

Once you added the exe, go to where it says "windows version" in the Wine configuration, and select "Windows XP" do this for all expansions/.exe files. If you do not make the version XP the game will not launch.

IMPORTANT; For some reasons when the host is the Windows User the player on the mac cant see the game... don't know why, but if the one hosting the game is the player on the mac, there are no issues.

As mentioned in the above:

Follow the usual instructions of getting the extras to run the game properly;d3dx9_36, quartz, mfc42.dll, l3codecx, msxml4.dll ,directX9

Wine configuration, and select "Windows XP"

Additional Comments

If you execute everything correctly, you should have a smooth time. Remember that this is mainly to play LAN with windows users. if you are all mac users, just get the macsoft version.
