What works

  • Network installation. Procedure I used is as follows:
    • Download the network installer package from here.
    • Extract CohUpdater.exe. (You don't need CovUpdater; it's just a skin for CohUpdater.) I put it somewhere outside my Wine directory hierarchy entirely.
    • cd to where you put the updater and run wine -compatiblecursors 1 CohUpdater.exe.
    • The updater will reload itself a few times, then City of Heroes will download itself over the network and install.
  • Running the game through the updater utility.
  • Game image verification. (Not intentionally.)
  • Logging in.
  • Character creation, including the Tutorial.
  • Selecting characters.
  • Navigating the world.
  • Changing costumes with the /cc command (but see below).
  • Entering the supergroup base.
  • Interacting with contacts.
  • Interacting with the Market.
  • Interacting with stores.
  • Managing Enhancements.
  • Power respecification.
  • PvE combat.
  • Instanced missions, including teams.
  • Both full screen and windowed mode.
  • Antialiased graphics through the NVIDIA driver settings utility.

What does not

  • Accessing the Tailor or bringing up the costume change menu: doing either of these immediately crashes the game (the /cc command works fine, so it's something in the costume display menu itself).
  • Forced dual core processor detection: running the game with -renderthread 1 hangs on the "LOADING" banner, and messes up the Wine registry at least for the game. I don't know if it was autodetecting my dual-core processor or not.
  • Antialiasing through the game's display settings - the setting is ignored.
  • Advanced shader options: cannot use water effects, bloom, or depth of field.
  • Custom cursors: run the game with -compatiblecursors 1 to avoid garbled cursors.
  • The chat window reacts strangely; the first character typed into it is always lost, and it is never exited until Escape is hit, sometimes twice.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Installation from CD. (Not as important as in most games; all of City of Heroes' installation media are so out of date it's barely worth it.)
  • Installation from network. (I ran the program off a direct copy from my Windows partition.)
  • Larger teams than three.
  • The Arena, or PvP of any kind.

Additional Comments

Fantastic work! This game didn't work at all a couple of months ago. Silver is only due to the costume menu crash.

HowTo / Notes

Note about setting game resolution

Information courtesy of Dan.

"There seems to be an issue currently with the ingame resolution options. If you change them, then click apply, it will reset the resolution back to before you changed it and tell you to restart. When you restart, the resolution won't have changed. To get it to change you have to set it to the correct resolution, apply, set it again, and then quit the game with the options menu still open."

Possible Fix for shaders (specific to NVidia cards)

Information courtesy of Tremblay:

In the registry, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\OpenGL, have the string value DisabledExtensions set to:

GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_NV_register_combiners GL_NV_register_combiners2 GL_NV_register_combiners3 GL_NV_texture_shader GL_NV_texture_shader2

(basically list each extensions with a space between each)

I can then set the in-game shader option higher than low with bumpmaps.

I think you *could* leave out GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object, I put it there because it helps World of Warcraft.

Jeff has offered another work around:

Run 'CohUpdater.exe -usetexenvcombine' to run in a low graphics mode that allows use of the costume selector and mission architect. Beats adding / removing the registry keys, and it'll usually retain your old graphics settings. Just make sure you don't have any level of antialiasing enabled (2x, 4x, etc) otherwise there'll be graphical wackiness
