What works

  • Game startup / login / installation from updater (haven't tested the CD in a while)
  • Character creation, all costume pieces
  • All actual gameplay works really well
    • Contacts
    • Missions / TFs / SFs / trials
    • Zoning (all zones)
    • Wentworth's / Black Market
    • Inventions
    • Issue 14 Architect features
      • Mission / arc creation
      • Critter creation
  • Chat - channels, tells
  • Most graphics and audio settings short of a few; also an issue with AA and nvidia (see below).
  • Various other things like purchasing slots / server moves / renames / etc.

What does not

  • Some graphics options such as bloom and water effects.  PhysX also isn't available.
  • The costume selector with an nvidia card will crash with a pbuffer error (workaround below)
  • Many portions of the Mission Architect with an nvidia card will crash with a pbuffer error (basically anything that displays content in a small rotatable box - boss info, a contact, a map maybe? - workaround below)
  • Chat issues still present (have to hit esc or click out of chat window after typing to remove focus, should be automatic)
  • If the updater isn't clicked through quickly enough (Next -> I Agree - generally two very quick clicks in the same place), it'll get hung on the EULA-type screen
  • Some people are having regular crashing issues after zoning a few times (myself included).  Usually outputs as a plain ol segfault or an error in the physx dll.  If anyone has any idea how to debug this I would be more than happy to help.
  • Running using multiple CPUs / cores.  Wine is fully capable of this (or that's my understanding), but we're not saying the magic words to the game to allow this to work.
  • It's debatable whether or not antialiasing is actually doing anything in this game, but I can't say for sure

Additional Comments

A couple tricks / workarounds: - Run 'CohUpdater.exe -usetexenvcombine' to run in a low graphics mode that allows use of the costume selector and mission architect. Beats adding / removing the registry keys, and it'll usually retain your old graphics settings. Just make sure you don't have any level of antialiasing enabled (2x, 4x, etc) otherwise there'll be graphical wackiness - To skip the updater all together (if for example you're having problems getting hung on the eula screen), run CityOfHeroes.exe -project coh. It'll warn you if you're not patched up to date. All tested using current Ubuntu 9.04 and the latest nvidia beta driver (185.xx) on a Intel c2d, 4gb of RAM, nvidia 7600gt

HowTo / Notes

Note about setting game resolution

Information courtesy of Dan.

"There seems to be an issue currently with the ingame resolution options. If you change them, then click apply, it will reset the resolution back to before you changed it and tell you to restart. When you restart, the resolution won't have changed. To get it to change you have to set it to the correct resolution, apply, set it again, and then quit the game with the options menu still open."

Possible Fix for shaders (specific to NVidia cards)

Information courtesy of Tremblay:

In the registry, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\OpenGL, have the string value DisabledExtensions set to:

GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_NV_register_combiners GL_NV_register_combiners2 GL_NV_register_combiners3 GL_NV_texture_shader GL_NV_texture_shader2

(basically list each extensions with a space between each)

I can then set the in-game shader option higher than low with bumpmaps.

I think you *could* leave out GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object, I put it there because it helps World of Warcraft.
