What works

Every normal aspect of play seems to function perfectly with the exception of some of the open bugs. I can move, fight, go in and out of buildings and zones, use the Mission Architect system to create or run player missions. I can use the character creator normally, select costumes, collect badges, use rewards and respecs, chat, train. I haven't seen any mouse stutter, though I have had to turn off the key repeat in Ubuntu (I use a script to start CoH that handles it).

What does not

Bug 10081 (won't start if trying to use multiple processors), bug 10082 (chat window stays active after hitting enter) and bug 13718 (rubber-banding) are still present. I have to start the game with the "-renderthread 0" option, click on the loading bar every time, and hit escape to leave the chat window. The rubber-banding is probably the most irritating issue.

Workarounds

What was not tested

I didn't try any PvP action, though I can't imagine why that would behave differently. I haven't bothered with Ultra mode, and probably wouldn't anyway since I use an older nVidia graphics chip. I installed using the Net-based executable available from the NCsoft site, not the DVD.

Additional Comments

So far, Wine 1.2rc1 seems to work at least as well as previous versions for everything I've tried. Recommended.

HowTo / Notes

Note about setting game resolution

Information courtesy of Dan.

"There seems to be an issue currently with the ingame resolution options. If you change them, then click apply, it will reset the resolution back to before you changed it and tell you to restart. When you restart, the resolution won't have changed. To get it to change you have to set it to the correct resolution, apply, set it again, and then quit the game with the options menu still open."

Possible Fix for shaders (specific to NVidia cards)

Information courtesy of Tremblay:

In the registry, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\OpenGL, have the string value DisabledExtensions set to:

GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_NV_register_combiners GL_NV_register_combiners2 GL_NV_register_combiners3 GL_NV_texture_shader GL_NV_texture_shader2

(basically list each extensions with a space between each)

I can then set the in-game shader option higher than low with bumpmaps.

I think you *could* leave out GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object, I put it there because it helps World of Warcraft.

Jeff has offered another work around:

Run 'CohUpdater.exe -usetexenvcombine' to run in a low graphics mode that allows use of the costume selector and mission architect. Beats adding / removing the registry keys, and it'll usually retain your old graphics settings. Just make sure you don't have any level of antialiasing enabled (2x, 4x, etc) otherwise there'll be graphical wackiness
