Additional Comments

I'm using Mark line command COHlauncher to install and run the game. To install the game, I first run (with no modifications) file in a terminal (be sure your file is executable). Once the process was done, I edited the file adding --repair command, and added client european version and french language (just change the argument 0 by 1 on matching lines) Then, I relaunched the file in a terminal. After a few minutes, the game was fully installed. I edited the file again ( with text editor to add a new option directly in it (quiet launch) and add -renderthread 0 on line 747 (my $command = "wine cityofheroes.exe -renderthread 0 " . join(" ", @args);). I launched the game another time...ANd it worked flawlessly. As fast (maybe more ! lol) than when I played it on my vista hard drive. The game is also surprisingly stable. I played about 6hours today without ANY crash or strange behaviour. I'm using proprietary Nvidia drivers (last ones available on my ubuntu pc), with a 9600gt card. The game works great (solid 22-30fps depanding the game aeras) in 1440x900 resolution, medium graphics details, and antialiasing x2. I hope that will be usefull for linux gamers.

HowTo / Notes

Note about setting game resolution

Information courtesy of Dan.

"There seems to be an issue currently with the ingame resolution options. If you change them, then click apply, it will reset the resolution back to before you changed it and tell you to restart. When you restart, the resolution won't have changed. To get it to change you have to set it to the correct resolution, apply, set it again, and then quit the game with the options menu still open."

Possible Fix for shaders (specific to NVidia cards)

Information courtesy of Tremblay:

In the registry, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\OpenGL, have the string value DisabledExtensions set to:

GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_NV_register_combiners GL_NV_register_combiners2 GL_NV_register_combiners3 GL_NV_texture_shader GL_NV_texture_shader2

(basically list each extensions with a space between each)

I can then set the in-game shader option higher than low with bumpmaps.

I think you *could* leave out GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object, I put it there because it helps World of Warcraft.;forum=1;msg=37609

Jeff has offered another work around:

Run 'CohUpdater.exe -usetexenvcombine' to run in a low graphics mode that allows use of the costume selector and mission architect. Beats adding / removing the registry keys, and it'll usually retain your old graphics settings. Just make sure you don't have any level of antialiasing enabled (2x, 4x, etc) otherwise there'll be graphical wackiness
