What does not

What was not tested

Haven't made it past the tutorial section, also some of the buttons at the bottom seemed buggy but my laptop was running at about 25fps so it was hard to tell.

Additional Comments

You need to set wine to run in 32 bit otherwise it seems to work fine. I'm going to test it with 1.6 later today and see if that works too in 32 bit, didn't get chance to test yesterday.

HowTo / Notes

How to download, install, and play Mighty Quest for Epic Loot (2014-03-07)

Best practices:

  • Try any new game in a new prefix - it makes it simple to delete, modify (add native dlls etc), copy etc.

  • When specifying a prefix, or changing directoy (cd), put the path in quotes(" or '). If the path has spaces in it, and you don't have quotes, it stops at the space. Generally, that is "program" from "C:\program files".

  • If the game runs VERY slowley, and lots of stuff is being put into the Terminal, add WINEDEBUG='-all' to the env bit.

Loading the Defence failed, along with in-game sounds using 64-bit, so use a 32-bit wineprefix (if using a 64-bit OS). This can be achieved simply by adding WINEARCH=win32 to the env bit before wine itself.

In the examples below, /home/[USER]/ is YOUR home folder. copy/pasting this will not work, unless your username is [USER].

To find out your own user path, navigate to any file in your home foler, and right-click > Properties. your home folder path should be shown there.

Also, this example has home/[USER]/wines/ as the main prefix folder. Pick anything you like :D If you prepend it with a dot (.) it will be hidden. (eg .wines)

Installing the game:

  1. go to, sign up/in, then download the installer.
  2. open a terminal:
  3. cd '[where you downloaded it, likely /home/[USER]/Downloads]'
  4. Create the new wineprefix, then run the installer in the new 32-bit version of wine:
  5. env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX='/home/[USER]/wines/MQ' wine [the name of the installer, ie MightyQuestSetup_231911.exe]
  6. Go through the installer, choosing whether to bother with start menu entries and the install path as usual.
  7. Uncheck "Launcher Mighty Quest" or however it is named on the last page. It would not gt past the Minimum requirements – yet.
  8. To get rid on in-game sound stutter, run winecfg, and set the Winedows Version to Windows 7.(Thanks Silviu C.)

Running the game:

cd into the launcher folder, in the installed directory:

cd '/home/[USER]/wines/MQ/drive_c/Program Files/The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot/Launcher'

Run the launcher, using the 32-bit, seperate prefix:

env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX='/home/[USER]/wines/MQ' wine PublicLauncher.exe

use as you would in Windows from now on :)

Because MQEL doesn't work with Wine 1.7.13, you can get an older version of Wine, while keeping your existing up-to-date one:

  • Install PlayOnLinux (sudo apt-get install playonlinux)

  • run PlayOnLinux

  • Tools > Manage Wine Versions

  • Wine Versions (x86) select 1.7.12

  • click the > in the middle of the window.

  • click next on the new window, and wait for it to download.

  • By default, the seperate, older wines are stored in:

To use the older version of wine, speecify this path like this:

your entire string should now be like this:

cd '/home/[USER]/wines/MQ/drive_c/Program Files/The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot/Launcher' && env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX='/home/[USER]/wines/MQ' /home/[USER]/.PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/1.7.12/bin/wine PublicLauncher.exe

kool huh?

Game well!

Credits to Jani Kärkkäinen and Silviu C. for their input.

Silviu C. also maintains Crossover's MQEL page :D

Update 22 uses a newer Launcher that appears to work when checking minimum requirements ymmv, but if you get an error, please put the error, along with your system specs (OS, gfx card, gfx card drivers) in a comment below.
