What works

Starting the game, sound, playing the intro video(s), basic gameplay.

What does not

The graphics are corrupted: Sometimes (i.e. in the main menu or when giving the character a certain pair of glasses) the objects are replaced by squares. Also, all the graphics are red-colored, which makes the game unplayable.

HowTo / Notes

Steam overlay

If you have any issues with crashes on mouse/keyboard input, corrupted graphics or other issues: try disabling the Steam game overlay.

 Even if it it doesn't break the game per-se, it might crash when you attempt to open it. Disabling it preemptively might be a good idea.

Wine configuration

For some users, it seems necessary to override the DirectX 9 libraries used by the game. It doesn't seem to be needed in all setups, specifically not for Wine 1.7.13+ users with NVIDIA proprietary drivers, but if you see a blank screen or graphics corruption, try overriding the following libraries, either manually or through Winetricks:

  1. d3dx9_43 -> (native, builtin)
  2. d3dcompiler_43 -> (native, builtin)

Steam should install the DirectX and Visual C++ redistributable packages automatically, but if for some reason they are missing, install them manually, through the Microsoft-provided downloads:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)

DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer
