What works

  • Managing personal and home-based business accounts, including banking, credit card, loan, 401(k), and investing accounts.
  • Transaction downloads from financial institutions (both via One Step Update and downloading to QFX and then opening in Quicken).
  • Reporting, budgeting and graphs.
  • Regular expense and income scheduling.
  • Business management such as invoicing.
  • Printing to host system printer.

What does not

  • Some minor formatting issues, such as escaped ampersands (eg, "Property && Debt") and headers in dialog boxes displaced down by 50% and so bottom half of text hidden.
  • Printing to Quicken PDF printer.
  • Automatic software updates.

Additional Comments

Online updating did not work in testing, but manually downloaded and applied updates did work. If installing on a 64-bit system, include the environment variable "WINEARCH=win32" as 64 bit wine does not seem to work fully with Quicken. If installing on a multiple core system, run all operations on a single core only as multiple core operations do not seem to be well managed under wine + Quicken. numactl was the method used for testing (eg, "numactl --physcpubind=+1 wine ...") No apparent difference between winecfg WinXP and Win7 in testing. Emulate a virtual desktop using winecfg display settings, else pop up dialog boxes may be invisible or pop under, making it appear as if Quicken has frozen. Requires Microsoft fonts, Internet Explorer 6 or higher and .Net 2 or higher. Easiest to install via winetricks (eg, WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/wineprefixes/QUICKEN_US numactl --physcpubind=+1 winetricks corefonts fontfix dotnet2 ie7). The vcrun6 msls31 and gdiplus all seem unnecessary; gdi seems to significantly slow down Quicken. IE7 seems to provide fastest and most complete browser experience ("install latest updates" unchecked during install). Manual and automatic updates seem to always fail subsequently if host system is connected to the internet during original installation and any automatic or manually downloaded & applied updates. All updates should be manually applied with host internet disabled, and automatic software updates should be disabled in Quicken. Quicken will complain on start up if the host system language is not English US; to suppress, add LANG environment variable to start up (eg, LANG=en_US.utf8 WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/wineprefixes/QUICKEN_US numactl --physcpubind=+1 wine '~/.local/share/wineprefixes/QUICKEN_US/drive_c/Program Files/Quicken/qw.exe')
