What works
Gameplay
Mods -- Ascension, BG2 Fixpack, and Sword Coast Strategems
What does not
Mods can cause stuttering or other bugs/performance problems.
Workarounds
Using ciopfs to run the game in a case insensitive file system solved stuttering and other issues caused by mods.
This workaround is not necessary for the vanilla (unmodded) game.
What was not tested

Additional Comments
Easiest way to install mods is in a Windows VM, then copy the game folder to the host machine and run it with wine.
Alternatively, mounting the game folder on a case insensitive file system before installing mods should also work.
While installing mods is easiest in a VM, it's not recommended to actually run the game in a VM -- wine should have much better performance (unless you use PCI passthrough).

Multiplayer can work, but requires some setup first.
The problem is with the current DirectPlay implementation. Read here how to set it up: http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames
To get multiplayer working for games that use a DirectPlay version prior to 8, place the following DLLs:
dplayx.dll, dpnet.dll, dpnhpast.dll and dpwsockx.dll in this archive in WINE's windows/system32 directory, then add DLL overrides (native, builtin) with WINECFG.
