HowTo / Notes

HOWTO Install & configure

Admin note: the instructions below are extremely old and may not apply to current Wine. Follow at your own risk.

In this HowTO I use Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy with wine 1.1.3.

Install the game

  1. Mount the install CD (this is distribution and configuration-dependent)
  2. Using the terminal, browse into the mounted CD directory and type "wine setup.exe" (without quotes)
  3. When Setup menu appears, select your preferred options (selecting radio station requires the second CD)
  4. When the installer asks for second CD, type in another terminal "wine eject" and mount the second CD (or image). (For me worked too without wine eject, I simply unmounted and Re mounted second image)
  5. When installation finishes you must disable the CD check by using a crack . Backup the original EXE before applying the crack.
You may also want or need the following steps to configure GTA:VC

Configuring Wine for GTA:VC

  1. Run wine configuration (or type winecfg in terminal)
  2. Add an application and select your "GTA VC exe"
  3. In graphical options enable all first 4 options (from Directx .... to Enable virtual desktop) and set Virtual desktop to 800x600.
  4. Now you can start GTA VC (be sure "Vice City Play" is mounted or inserted, My crack tries to find CD, but will accept both the original or the image).
GTA VC crashes and the screen resolution is broken
If you get this kind of crash and your resolution is set down to nonsense, execute the command "xrandr -s 0" on a Konsole window or a XTerm.
What to do if your keyboard doesnt work

Make sure the option "Allow the window manager to control the windows" in winecfg (tab "Graphics") is activated.

To kill off a running, but not responding, GTA (and any other programs/processes that Wine is running), run "wineserver -k". You may need to log in to a text-only terminal by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 (on most distributions).
