Open Winetricks
Select Default Wineprefix
Change Settings (alternatively, just run '$ winecfg' in terminal)
Add application (browse to spintires.exe in the installed directory)
Go to libraries tab
Type 'd3dx9_36' or select from drop down
Click 'Edit'
Set to Native (Windows)
Click 'add' and 'apply'
The game should run after that. (Note: this works on stable wine, and is currently broken. There is a bug report open for this)
The fonts will also appear incorrectly unless you install the Windows
fonts in WINE. To do that: Open Winetricks>Select Default
wineprefix>Install a font>all fonts. Then wait for many popup
windows to appear and disappear. This fixes the in game font.
