I actually got it to work at one point (completed calibration and several scans, even switching to another USB-RS232 adapter mid-stream) but after reboot couldn't do it again, even after a score of attempts.

While testing RS-232 port, used 2 different USB-RS232 converters that worked w/ Linux programs. Referred to http://aim4150.proboards.com/thread/326. Tried resetting things in different order. Used stty to change baud rate and to confirm that changing "0" to "1" in the appropriate spot in the app config file caused it to initialize to 57kbps instead of 115k.
