HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Latest Game Version: 1.31.0

There have been substantial changes such as

  • Integrated Direct3D 11 and Metal graphic APIs
  • 64-bit support
  • Changes to command line argument syntax

Patchnotes can be found here

Game shows only a black screen but audio works

As of 1.31.0 the default rendering backend changed to something that might result in a black screen upon game start.

The following command line argument forces d3d9 mode which can fix the issue (1.31.0)
-graphicsapi Direct3D9

The mouse feels sluggish

Consider using -windowmode fullscreen

Players can't join my Battle.net games, what is wrong?

There are two causes for this problem:

  • A firewall or router blocks the connections attempts. Make sure you have the correct ports open. Open outbound and inbound, TCP and UDP, port 6112, or whatever you set in the game configuration. More Network Ports
  • lib32-gnutls or gnutl is not installed on your system

How to fix problems related to the Local Area Network option?

If you try to play using the Local Area Network option, and do not see a game hosted from your machine on another or vice versa, and you are in the same subnet, this is likely caused by not having a default gateway. The game relies on sending UDP packets to the broadcast address and Linux will not send them unless there is a default gateway or another rule to handle them. To fix it, there are two methods:

Add a default gateway.
- OR -
Route 255. 255. 255. 255 to your local network.

See Wine Traffic #62 for another description of the issue. This is not considered a bug.

How to fix cursor/mouse problem in windowed mode?

When running windowed, if you move the cursor out of the screen and back again, sometimes it stays as the scrolling cursor and not the pointer cursor. Hover the mouse over a unit or building to fix the cursor. This is an oversight in the game itself and not a bug in Wine. Use mouse grab or full screen mode to bypass this problem. You may also disable automatic scrolling and use the middle mouse button or the directional keys (non-keypad) for manual scrolling.

Remapping numpad keys

Xmodmap remapping does not work. Consider using something more low level such as xkeysnail.

WARNING - Crash with ATI cards

Several users with ATI Radeon video cards encounter problems when playing. If run in Direct3D mode (e.g. without -opengl switch or registry hack) Warcraft 3 doesn't even start up. If run in OpenGL mode, the console prints these error messages

libGL error: drmMap of framebuffer failed (.............)
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

and the game is extremely slow with corrupted graphics because it uses the MESA Software OpenGL implementation instead of the 3D hardware acceleration of the ATI card.

If you encounter the same problem, have a solution to it or ATI, Wine and WC3 are running fine for you, please describe it in this bug report:

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13335

How to disable window manager's alt key combo

Window managers often have the alt key bound to certain features, especially the alt-click. THIS IS NOT A WINE BUG. If you have problems with the alt key in any way DO NOT REPORT IT. Fix your window manager. I'm not going to list steps for every one because there are too many possibilites. Figure out yourself or ask in a help forum (here is okay... but be warned all I use is TWM). If you are desperate, turn off window manager managed windows in winecfg.

KDE

Go into KDE Control Center, expand Desktop, click window behavior, then click window actions tab. You can turn off the alt-combos. If you want to make window specific settings, click on window specific settings under window behavior on the side.

GNOME

The option to change the key binding is in System Menu -> Preferences Menu -> Windows.

How to play without CD?

Connect to battle.net to upgrade to the latest version of Warcraft 3 which doesn't need a CD.

If you ever get "Please insert disc", this is NOT a problem with detecting the CD. The protection system is probably still built into the game even though the CD check itself is disabled. Make sure you use version 1.21b or later. If you get this problem after having this version installed, you are likely suffering from a buggy video driver as this is the only known (and proven possible) cause at this point.

DO NOT USE NOCD PATCHES - They are pointless, and won't fix the real problem.

Skip the intro videos

Method 1: Rename the videos

After installing the game, its highly recommended that you browse to your Warcraft III folder and rename the movies folder. Many people crash from the movies because of buggy sound drivers, or simply hang, so you should do this in case you are one of them. You can still play the movies under mplayer (or xine if you so choose)! TutorialIn.mpq is the very first cinematic of the game, and for the rest; *Op.mpq is the cinematic at the start of the campaign and *Ed.mpq is the cinematic and the end. If you wanted to follow the story, it's not hard at all to play the ones corresponding where you are at.

Method 2: Mark the intro as seen

If you don't want to play the campaign, but only want to start Warcraft III without a crash while playing the intro then you can simply mark the intro as seen:

  1. Open reedit:
    $ wine regedit
  2. Navigate in regedit to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Blizzard/Warcraft III/
  3. Create a key (folder) Misc in the Warcraft III key. You can do so by right clicking the key.
  4. Create a DWORD value seenintromovie with the value 0x1
  5.

1.2.7b gives a "Can't find game.dll" error
by Juni Song on Thursday May 14th 2020, 6:43
Been trying to set up Warcraft III for a good bit and every time I patch it up to these versions, it gives me te "Can't find game.dll" error, sometimes it gives the disc check error too but not always. This is after going from an early 1.21 install to 1.27b.

Tested on Manjaro Linux 5.6.11 with Wine 5.8.

I've also had no luck getting this to run, useful for PVPGN servers.
I cant run. Installing might have been an issue.

The installer said that it was dependent on the agent. I tried installing battle.net client and that didn't fix the issue and now results in error 0.

Migration from ArchWiki

You can move useful information to HowTo/Notes and delete this comment:

WarCraft III is a real-time strategy game created by Blizzard Entertainment. This article will describe how to install and run it and its addon The Frozen Throne on Arch Linux using Wine.
WarCraft III can be run with full OpenGL support.

Installing Wine
If you need any further help check out the Wine article. You will also want to run winecfg and change a few settings to your liking before running the install CD.

Configuring Wine
This shows you how to configure Wine before installing WarCraft III and The Frozen Throne.

Windows version
In order to make copy protection work under Wine you must switch your Windows version to 2000 or XP.

Audio
Both OSS and ALSA work. If you expierence difficulties with ALSA you may want to switch to OSS. Please note that aoss can make your sound glitch every three seconds so it is not recommend to use it.

Devices
In order for the copy protection to work you must add a CD-ROM device:
Add a device, set path to /media/cdrom (or whatever you use when you mount CDs) and change the device type to "CD-ROM".

Installation
The following process will detail how to install WarCraft III and the expansion The Frozen Throne and finally update to the current version.

Installing WarCraft III: The Reign of Chaos
This is rather simple. DO NOT use cracked versions of this game.

* Place the CD in your drive and mount it (or let it automount if that's how your machine is setup).
* Open a terminal and change in the directory of the CD.
* Run
wine install.exe
* Follow the dialog boxes of the setup and enter your key when it asks for it.
* Do not forget to leave the directory or you may have problems getting your CD back from your computer.

Installing WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne
Please follow the same procedure as above, using the CD of The Frozen Throne instead.

Upgrading to the current version
You can try updating via Battle.net or use an offline patch. For the first solution just hit the Battle.net button in the main menu after you have started the game. Be sure you have read the post installation tipps before running WarCraft III the first time. If you want to patch offline, follow these steps:

*Look [us.battle.net/support/en/article/classic-game-patches here] for the patch.
*Download the current patch and save it in the directory you installed WarCraft III.
*Open a terminal, change into that directory and run the patch via
wine .exe

If you have patched to version 1.22 or higher you do not need your CD anymore for starting the game.

Post installation tricks
There are some things you might want to fix before running WarCraft III the first time because they still can cause you trouble. If one of the following registry keys or values does not exist, simply create it.

Disabling intro movies
The movies are not displayed correctly and cannot be aborted. So we set them to be already seen.

*Open a terminal, run
regedit
*Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III\Misc
*Set "seenintromovie" to "1".

Widescreen resolution
The option menu of WarCraft III does not support high widescreen resolutions. If you want to use one you have to put it in the registry by hand. Please note that you will loose this setting if you enter the options menu inside WarCraft III because it will overwrite your setting with the highest value it is capable of.

*Open a terminal, run
regedit
*Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III\Video
*Set "resheigth" and "reswidth" to whatever you prefer. Pay attention that you can enter either hexadecimal or decimal values.

Alt key combo
If you like to use [Alt] + left click for minimap signal and you are using KDE or GNOME you will find that this feature does not work due to keyboard shortcuts with [Alt] that your desktop environment uses.

GNOME
The option to change the key binding is in System -> Preferences -> Windows.

KDE
Go into KDE Control Center, expand Desktop, click window behavior, then click window actions tab. You can turn off the alt combos. If you want to make window specific settings, click on window specific settings under window behavior on the side.

Alt+Tab
Normally, using alt+tab key combo, and then coming back to the game, will make it unplayable - for example bar(s) will of your desktop will remain displayed.

There is an easy workaround: go to winecfg and make a virtual desktop with size of your current resolution. This will also allow you to play movies. You can make a special wine settings for Warcraft III.exe and Frozen Throne.exe only, so you will not need to turn on/off a virtual desktop every time.

Running WarCraft III
You can now run WarCraft III. You can check if the installer has made you a starter in your applications menu. If so, you can use it. If you have any problems you may want to check the command to start WarCraft III. The path to your WarCraft III folder can be different depending on the location of your wine folder and the installation path of WarCraft III.

WarCraft III: The Reign of Chaos
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Warcraft\ III/war3.exe -opengl

WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Warcraft\ III/Frozen\ Throne.exe -opengl

You do not need the -opengl parameter if your Direct3D rendering is fast enough. Please test this for yourself.

Troubleshooting
Patch 1.23
To login to battle.net with the latest version of wine make sure you have lib32-gnutls or gnutls installed.

No Sound in 64bit
install following packages: lib32-alsa-lib, lib32-alsa-plugins

new patch 1.27 breaks this app
by Cory on Wednesday March 16th 2016, 21:34
Seems the new patch, 1.27, is causing problems for a lot of folks on many systems, not just Wine.

In any case, I now get the following error on launch, also reported on the Blizzard forums:

err:module:import_dll Library MSVCR120.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\Warcraft III\\Storm.dll") not found
err:module:import_dll Library Storm.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\Warcraft III\\war3.exe") not found
err:module:import_dll Library MSVCR120.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\Warcraft III\\war3.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\Warcraft III\\war3.exe" failed, status c0000135

accompanied by a CD Drive Error requesting that I ensure my CD is in the drive (which doesn't help).

I've tried installing the digital client from Blizzard, which also fails to run (not sure how to force this to go through Wine).

I did notice the new digital download installation includes new packages, including a DirectX setup which states DirectX 9.0c, which fails to install as it is not compatible with the version of Windows currently installed.

I was getting this after a fresh install (news of the patch and discussions about the game at work made me want to play it again). After failing to get it running via CD, I gave downloading from the Blizzard website a go, and it works like a charm. Version 1.27a and no problems as yet, online or offline.

Hello
Does this mean you were able to play online too?
Can you please give details on your setup?
I can't get on Battle.net
Anything else works though.
