Skype

Skype 7.x for PC features a new revamped UI, better UI customization and touch support.

This version of Skype works very unreliably under Wine: you cannot login normally, it often crashes, video calls do not work, it may open a certain website multiple times. Your best bet will be to use a native, albeit very old version or use its web browser version at web.skype.com.

HowTo / Notes

Native version available
There is a native Linux version of Skype available at the official Skype website.

Also you can use Skype for a web browser.
Working with a Windows version of Skype in Wine

In order to run Skype 7 in Wine you have to modify Skype's lnk file and add /legacylogin parameter or you won't be able to login. In order to enable audio in Skype you have to change Windows version to 8.1 using winecfg.

Updated how-to for most recent Skype releases:

For best results create a separate fresh wineprefix.

1. Download and install Skype.

2. Install Internet Explorer 8.0 using winetricks. Opt out of the improvement survey and do not install updates (it won't work anyway).

3. Run winecfg and set Windows version to 8 or 8.1.

4. Modify Skype's lnk file to include your username and password:

/username:"username" /password:"password"

Currently video calls don't work in Skype 7.

Can't install IE8
by Nelson Branquinho on Wednesday September 7th 2016, 7:12
with winetricks I got and error that "sha1sum mismatch!"

I think that is because it's using this link winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/winetricks_files/winetest.cat and it's wrong.

I have download the script for winetricks and I'm using it.

WINETRICKS_VERSION=20160724

It's possible to help?

Thx!

I used the step by step solution. Logging in with normal Skype accounts works, but not with live accounts. Is there any solution?

Internet explorer problem
by testest on Monday January 18th 2016, 14:01
Here lies the problem: It's actually not possible to install ie11 or edge with wine on linux (at least easily).
Does anyone around here have fancy binairies of it?

(You were asking to install ie11 and edge with this link, right?)

"Sorry, we couldn't connect to Skype" error
by chuen on Monday January 4th 2016, 17:10
Hi there,

I managed to install Skype 7.x on wine-1.9.0 (manjaro, arch linux).

I've followed the important side notes, but after I launch skype I get the message "Sorry, we couldn't connect to Skype" inside the opened skype window.

I get to the same point in a 64bit and a 32bit WINEPREFIX.

Can anyone help me with that?

Thanks!

Regards

Skype relies on Internet Explorer for login.
What I did to resolve this issue was:
winecfg, change to windows XP (ie8 can't install in other modes)
winetricks ie8
Open IE8 at /drive_c/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe
Tools > Internet Options > LAN Settings > Automatically detect settings
Close iexplore, winecfg to change to windows 8/8.1 (skype doesn't have sound otherwise)
Run/install skype again and it should connect.

Also, I had good results running it with Skype.exe /username:"username" /password:"password"

This fixed my issue. Thank you.

I don't like that the password is in the output to ps now but everything works except my webcam so I cant complain.
where to append /legacylogin
by lilly on Wednesday May 6th 2015, 16:45
I do not know how to modify the ink file.
Could somebody please specify the instructions.
In the text editor it is not obvious where to put the command.
All combinations I tried did not work.
RE: where to append /legacylogin
by Artem S. Tashkinov on Thursday May 7th 2015, 2:09
After installing Skype you have to have the Skype.desktop file somewhere in your home directory.

Open it with any text editor, and edit the "Exec" line. Add to the end of it "/legacylogin" without quotes.
RE: where to append /legacylogin
by Carl Gessau on Tuesday June 9th 2015, 14:10
I wasn't quite sure either so I created a shortcut using playonlinux and then edited the .Desktop file with

Exec=/usr/share/playonlinux/playonlinux --run "Skype" "/legacylogin" %F

instead of

Exec=/usr/share/playonlinux/playonlinux --run "Skype" %F
