Additional Comments

This is on a fresh install of kubuntu 15.04 development version with a fresh new install of wine 1.7.35. I have nothing installed from winetricks, AND at this time I don't even have winetricks installed. Nothing extra installed, and no 3rd party launcher needed. Working straight out of the box with the lotro default launcher (turbinelauncher.exe).

Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen
by Dif on Saturday May 9th 2015, 7:36
Since there isn't a page for Update 16 yet, I'll write here.

Since Update 16, the client crash before showing the character selection screen.

Unfortunatelly I am not getting any specific error message.

Anyone else has this issue? :(
RE: Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen
by Erich Fischer on Wednesday May 13th 2015, 19:38
I also have this issue, and like you I have no output at all. I am not well versed in wine debug tracing, but I sense that somewhere the client is waiting for a response and wine has the function implemented with a null return. Just a hunch though.

Side note, I don't think it's necessarily a graphics problem since the game exhibits the same behavior whether using the D3D9 renderer or the OpenGL one.

If someone has any suggested traces to run I'd be happy to post my logs from them (+all killed my system xD).
RE: Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen
by William Magill on Wednesday May 13th 2015, 21:18
This is a common problem, not related to WINE. Both the Mac Client and the PC Client exhibit this behavior at times. However, many players, including myself, have never had this problem, others "always" get it on a new installation.

To my knowledge, there is no known fix - i.e. one that ALWAYS works.
The "usual suspects" do tend to work, but there is no indication WHICH of those usual suspects (if any) is the real perp.

It does appear to be communications related. Therefore one "trick" which seems to work is flushing one's ARP cache -- i.e. getting a new route to Turbine's servers.

However, as I mentioned, I have never had the problem with either the Mac Client specifically, or with the Crossover version of WINE. But then I've been using both for many years now. (Founder/Lifetime, player since 2007). And no, I don't use the LINUX version.

Sorry for the late reply.

Unfortunately it isn't something that happens at times. Before U16 my client would occasionally crash (totally closing up without error) during game play and I got used to that, but since U16 I cannot even get to the character selection screen ... 100% of the time.

Is there something I can try?
RE: Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen

Are you using PyLotRO? I'm using PyLotRO 0.2.2 with WINE 1.6.2 and it works fine for me :-)
(I think I got it here: github.com/nwestfal/pylotro/)
RE: Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen
by Dif on Tuesday May 19th 2015, 15:55
Thanks for pointing to a new version of Pylotro. I was using the Turbine's launcher, but with Pylotro I got an error message that may lead to the cause of my problem.

Just to be more clear on my issue, once I log in (with either the Turbine's launcher or Pylotro), the client starts and I then get (normal things until the crash):
- a first splash screen;
- a screen with various lines (I cannot take note of all, but the last is "Receiving character data");
- the video with the Turbine's logo animation;
- another splash screen;
- a screen with a loading bar;
- and then the game crash (the screen I should get is the one with the list of the characters I have on the server).

As I said, Pylotro gave me an error that the Turbine's launcher didn't give:
err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from multi-threaded to apartment threaded

RE: Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen
by Kai on Tuesday May 19th 2015, 16:56
I'm sorry, I do not know what to make of those error messages - I am rather new to this topic...

Anyway - maybe you are simply missing a dll that is now (after the update) somehow needed? (although I _imagine_ that this is rather unlikely)

I installed the following dlls using winetricks:
d3dx9
d3dx9_*
devenum
dxdiag
dxdiagn
quartz
vcrun2003
vcrun2005
vcrun2008

I did not document my installation procedure any further, but is there anything else that might help? e.g. would my list of dll overrides be of any use to you?
RE: Update 16 - Client crash before characters screen
by Erich Fischer on Thursday May 21st 2015, 16:32
So I've been on and off playing around with it, trying different overrides, settings, etc, when it occured to me that while no one specifically said it, most people have corefonts installed in their wine bottles. So I made a new one (32 bit, ofcourse), ran 'winetricks corefonts', and voila, lotro got past the loading and to the character selection screen. I don't know if that will fix your problem, but it sure sounds the same to me, so worth a try I'd guess. Good luck!

Hi

Did you have any luck with that "Bad file descriptor"?

FYI - Memory Leak fixed in 15.2 (finally!)
by William Magill on Monday February 16th 2015, 9:33
In the recent Thursday Fun with Frelorn 02/5/2015 there was a "Special Guest appearance Athena "Vyvyanne" Peters Executive Producer. " www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?554350-Frelorn-Q-amp-A-from-Livestreams&p=7317278#post7317278

Question 9 was interesting in that vein:

Question: Did you do anything to performance client side for 15.2? I am getting better frames per second since the patch, but I didn't see anything noted in the patch notes.

Vyvyanne: We did a major improvement to a memory leak that we had prior to 15.2, we are watching to see how well we fixed that, so far it's looking positive, but we will keep an eye on it. If players notice any issues please be sure to let us know.

The "memory leak" issue is/has been a primary factor in client crashes since Rohan. The simple fact that LOTRO is a 32-bit game trying to live in a 64-bit world means that the enhancements in Graphics implemented in Riders of Rohan pushed the absolute memory requirements of LOTRO way-past the 4gig limit of a 32-bit world. That coupled with the basic "land-block" design of LOTRO has been a significant crash causer for 2 years now.

Wonder of wonders -- I play on an 8 gig, 2.93 mhz, 27 inch iMac, and the absolute time between crashes to the desktop (for me at least) has been one hour and six minutes. I can watch it happen via Buff Bars timers. Last night I played my Beorning for 3 hours straight, while working Book 5 - I finally went to bed just before entering the Helegrod Treasurery! I was actually flabbergasted when I realized I had passed the one hour mark with no crash. And that book run has you wandering all over Eriador. I was "cheating" by using the Mithril Coin quest objective port all the time instead of Swift Traveling, but that has not made a difference in the past.

So, put your observer hats on and pay attention to MTBF!

someone knows how to solve the problem of load lotro splash screen, sometimes you have to wait almost one hour ..
RE: FYI - Memory Leak fixed in 15.2 (finally!)
by William Magill on Monday March 30th 2015, 10:09
I don't know what you are saying/asking.

If you are talking about how long it takes to download the 30 splash screens.
There is no way to prevent or speed up this attempt.

Several Tricks have worked in the past, including simply locking the "raw" directory.
This causes the download to error, but it still attempts to download all 30 screens (10 for each language.)

If you need copies of the splash screens because you get a grey crosshatch displayed, I keep a set on my web-server: www.mcgillsociety.org/PyLotRO/index.html

hi, thanks for answering. the problem is that windows 7 does not take me or one minute to download the splash screens. with wine can take up to 5, 10, 15, 20 ... minutes
