Version range: 0.9.0 (2014-04-16) - 0.9.22.0.1 (2018.02.14)
For further details, see: Older World of Tanks versions.
the basic game as I expected to play it works, and works well. 60+ FPS and good graphics (with a few very minor glitches) at least for the SD client
What does not
the installer, while it ultimately worked, indicated a wine crash many times, ,perhaps 10 times, during the install. i forgot the exact message down (just said something unhelpfully generic about wine), but the dialog gives you the option to restart or continue the install. doing that, after a moment or so, it picks up where it left off and continues. so, while the constant errors being thrown seems kind of sketchy, and you can't wander off to putter in the garage, it does get the job done.
the graphics are overall good (for SD client, i havent tried the HD client), but there are a couple glitches or quirks.
(1) the splash screen intro video is choppy and stuttery, and pretty gross. but its only a few seconds and then its okay.
(2) in the garage, the displayed tank looks janky, missing treads or missing wheels or weird black patches on the surface. but once out in team battle, it seems to clear up and it is totally playable and if there remain any surface artifacts it is not annoying or really even noticable while playing
Install workarounds: Other than the repeated wine crashes during the install (that i just hitting continue until it finally completed) this mostly seemed out of the box from the windows installer at Wargaming dot net.
i DID use winetricks to install d3dx9_36 xact_jun2010 because i've seen that said many places and seems a common issue, but i dont actually know if it was required.
Otherwise generally followed basic instructions as are written many places elsewhere. followed the windows installer prompts and installed IE as requested (lol) but did not "restart" when prompted. deselected the windows installer options so as to NOT create a desktop icon or receive updates.
What was not tested
did not try to install HD. and now that SD is working fine, i'm afraid to mess with it LOL. i'd be interested to hear if HD installed for someone. Have not tried any of the premium features, and have not tried any mods.
i hesitated on rating this gold or silver. i'd say maybe 14K white gold, lol. clearly it's not better than native windows, and some minor things are a little off, but not at all in any way that affects play, at least for the basic game as i play it
Note, i had terrible problems getting this to work with PoL, and do not recommend. i also first tried this on 2.18-staging (or was it 2.19-staging) that i got as the most current stable release from Wine, and it failed miserably. then i went back to 2.0.2 and it worked beautifully, at least from the perspective of someone who was ready to give up.
So, end result is i can play the game. i get 60+ FPS. it looks good and controls are all solid. if there's some few minor graphics artifacts, or 3 seconds of heavy stutter splash screen video... well, who cares. it's Gold for me.
