What works

- Loading projects
- Saving projects
- Recording
- Simultaneous playback of 11 stereo tracks (my biggest project so far)
- Importing and exporting audio
- Builtin effects (done on 11 stereo tracks all at once)
- Registration and listing of my approximately 130 free Windows VST effects
-- Note (not Wine specific): There's a weird bug in Audacity that means you may not be able to use subdirectories for your VST effects.
- Using VSTs in text mode
- Most VSTs in graphical mode
- All the standard builtin functionality of Analyze, Generate, etc. as well as editing.
-- Even the Transport -> "Rescan Audio Devices" menu point seems to work (insofar that it doesn't crash Audacity anyway... - see "What Doesn't work")

What does not

- Crash: Selecting any Audio Host other than "Windows Directsound" (see NOTE under install instructions).
- When using some third party VST effects in graphical mode they will *not* update their GUI knobs etc on launch or preset change. The values behind *will* change correctly on preset change though, and likewise fiddling with the settings *will* modify the values; but next time you launch the VST, the GUI is reset again.
-- Note: As far as I can tell, this is the case only for Kjaerhus Audio VSTs. No other of my VSTs show similar behaviour.

What was not tested

FFMpeg and LAME integration.

Additional Comments

WHAT IS ANNOYING: - The popups on mouse hover steals keyboard focus. Say for instance you click the Selection Start control and want to edit the value, then you'll lose focus before being able to input anything. You have to move the mouse a little (not outside the control!) and click again. INSTALL METHOD 1: Download audacity-win-2.0.6.exe installer Install - will crash upon completion (that's ok, we'll fix it) Edit audacity.cfg located in "~/.wine/drive_c/users/YOUR-USER_NAME/Application Data/Audacity/" The line "Host=MME" may or may not be present in the block [AudioIO]. - If it is there, then change it to "Host=Windows DirectSound" (without the quotes). - If either lines isn't there, create. Remember we want "Host=Windows DirectSound", not MME. - Important: If there are other settings in the [AudioIO] block, delete them (regardless of their value). They will be autogenerated. - Save and exit. Launch Audacity - it will now open correctly. INSTALL METHOD 2: If you do not feel confident editing the audacity.cfg file directly, here is a workaround: Download audacity-win-2.0.2.exe installer Install + launch Within Audacity there's a dropdown, that says "MME"; select instead "Windows Directsound". Exit Audacity 2.0.2 Now proceed to download audacity-win-2.0.6.exe installer Install it (it will overwrite 2.0.2 without trouble) Launch Audacity 2.0.6 - and you're good to go :) NOTE: If you accidentally happen to select either the MME or Windows Wasapi host in Audacity, it will crash immediately! In that case you will have to redo METHOD 1 above. METHOD 2 may work too - I have not tried that. Sometimes METHOD 1 will not work immediately; then you'll have to: - delete the audacity.cfg file altogether; - launch Audacity again (will create file then crash); - and finally proceed to change the Host setting to Windows Directsound as described in METHOD 1.
