What works

All game modes work at native speeds and you shouldn't experience crashes pending multiple workarounds described below.

What does not

It seems impossible to remap keys for the controller or keyboard.

Multiple winetricks are needed for sound effects and videos to play, as well as preventing a crash when the character models finish loading at character select.

Workarounds

For sound effects to work: winetricks xact

For videos to play: winetricks devenum quartz wmp10 (or wmp9) wmv9vcm - note that Windows Media Player currently requires a 32-bit prefix. So, when creating the prefix, run WINEARCH=win32 winecfg.

To prevent a crash when character models load: d3dx9_43

So, for easy copying: WINEARCH=win32 winetricks -q d3dx9_43 devenum quartz wmp10 wmv9vcm xact

If you happen to experience a crash immediately at startup, set MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2010 in your environment before you launch Steam. The game seems to crash if 2x MSAA isn't supported. You can check System Information under Steam's Help menu to see if this applies to your GPU.

If you want to make a purchase and installed Steam with winetricks, run winecfg and re-enable gameoverlayrenderer as there are no issues with it regarding this game.

What was not tested

I haven't finished the story, but I've spent a lot of time in the game.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Intel
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

It turns out that winetricks xact provides what dxsdk_jun2010 provides and is preferred because the SDK also installs its own .NET 2.0, which can cause problems with Mono and other .NET versions.

There seems to be a huge performance boost at wine-staging version 2.18, so I recommend this version if you're on a low-end machine.
