What works

There are only improvements to the 12.4.2 version, which has been thoroughly tested by Unobscured Vision already; but here's an overview of his test:

  • All default plugins and generators work perfectly. It's as smooth as on Windows.
  • Export options are on par. Rendering to wav, mp3, midi, and saving channel events as midi.
  • FL Studio ASIO . You might expect a virtual ASIO device to be useless on Linux but truth is the passthrough DirectInput is slower than going through ASIO to PulseAudio directly.

What does not

  • ASIO4ALL. Useless anyway as FL Studio is the way to go.
  • Multithreading. This is more a problem with Wine in general than with FL Studio only. Some staging branches can help with that, but other than that you'll be stuck on 1 CPU core only, which is a real shame and you'll find this preventing you from truly using FL Studio on Linux in production.

What was not tested

  • VSTs (not thoroughly). I have few VSTs that I really use, the main one being Serum, but me needing Splice to activate it, there's no really point in installing it as Splice doesn't work. Basic VST2 plugins work (sforzando, Rea* plugs) but then it becomes more an issue on the VSTs themselves than FL Studio itself.
  • Live performance. Although I do run FL for extended periods of time, I didn't test it with 128 samples latency to check it if held up to it. Furthermore my laptop isn't powerful enough to handle it.
  • Graphics-heavy plugins. Plugins like Wave Candy or zGame Editor should work in theory (OpenGL based), but I have not tested them, although in the past I have seen some issues with alpha bringing very high latency on the UI.

HowTo / Notes

Set a virtual desktop for FL Studio to better support window managers, and workspaces.

The FL Studio UI can sometimes go haywire if you workspaces in your desktop environment - the audio engine works and events are handled (for example, space still plays/pauses the project) but the UI is frozen.
