What works
Most single file operations, batch conversion
What does not
some problems with slow redraw, nothing evil. Installing with the IrfanView official download image only works with a mfc42.dll; and most old versions of that do not work (like those downloaded illegally from the Internet) because you need a recent version of mfc42.dll ("Ordinal 6880 not found" or something like that). Mine from my Win XP copied to the same folder as the iview398g.exe worked fine.
The program did not register in the start menu here on Ubuntu. So I had to use the Terminal and type "cd .wine/drive_c/Pro*/IrfanView/" and then "wine i_view32.exe". The Desktop links did not work either. However, you can of course make your own link files.
Thumbnail mode ("T") did not really work - the images had a weird look with inverted colours. This is an x86 system, so it shouldn't be an Endianness issue - I'm not sure what causes it. I'm on 24 bit colour depth. Showing them in the actual viewer did work fine.
Workarounds
