What works

The entire mod tested at least through the Temple of Trials plus Arroyo levels.

What does not

This mod has become finicky since the last data for it (1.x series ancient!) because of major changes in Wine. It will install into Fallout 2 directory fine enough, but requires quite a bit to be configured before Fallout 2 proper is even launched.

Workarounds

A clean install of Fallout 2 is absolutely required, or it will simply crash through a variety of factors (the most famous one being the "error loading cities" bug).

This is a step-thru-step process copied over from NMA that was targeted with MacOS in mind, but will apply here.

  1. You must get an offline installation of Fallout 2 and under no circumstances should it have ever been run. You will have to delete your entire FO2 directory and potentially even your whole Wine prefix. This was tested under a GOG build of FO2.
  2. Do not under any circumstances touch the game or the high-res patch that the GOG version at least provides (untested on Steam).
  3. You may install the Restoration Project v2.3.3 and under no circumstances should you run the game at all even with a successful installation.
  4. You must make an library override for ddraw (set to native) for both FALLOUT2.EXE and Fallout2HR.exe to avoid the "error loading cities".
  5. For MacOS users, it is recommended to make sure all .pro files in critters and items folder are read-only/locked or you will likely have to consult step one in entirety. On openSUSE Leap 15.2 this was already done.
  6. You may launch the game finally clicking Fallout 2 (do not click Classic) in your Wine menu.

What was not tested

I did not test anything once I left the Arroyo level.

Additional Comments

This game is very finicky to get properly setup as a result of the age and the possible changes to Wine since 1.x series. If this test data does not work out for you, you may try to use Gallium Nine as a last resort and set library overrides for d3d9 to the two applications. However, once the game is fully configured and run, everything works out of the box.

If you want performance boosts, make sure SingleCore=1 and ProcessorIdle=1 are your settings in ddraw.ini (you may have to set SingleCore to 0 if lag occurs).
