What works

Opening PDFs and Viewing them

Filling and Saving PDF forms including XFA PDF forms (Forms downloaded form government websites)

Ability to add comments, typing on simple PDFs using the form tool, stamps

What does not

Cannot use the signature tool

Dialogues and preference screens do not have text

Workarounds

For the signature it's possible use an image of the signature and then just use the stamp tool to paste it. Not the most secure option but it's a choice

Dialogues and preference screens without text can be fixed by installing microsoft fonts, especially the sego* fonts.

What was not tested

I tested the basic functionality that 90% of people will use

Additional Comments

I tested Adobe Reader DC Dec 2019 (19.021.20058)

I installed using PlayonLinux then changed wine version to 5.0

My emulated OS was Windows 7

All of this was installed on an Ubuntu 18.04 container which was itself running on Chrome OS.

  4. Download the latest Adobe Reader from Adobe's enterprise website (Last Tested v21.011.20039)

  7. Optional: Change Wine version to latest in System (PlayOnLinux Application Configuration)
XFA PDF forms

This is the only software that allows users to properly fill out XFA PDF forms. These forms are used by a lot of government agencies and other organizations. You cannot use the mobile versions of Adobe Reader to fill these forms either. You need a windows or Mac version to do this.

On Linux installing the windows Version of Adobe reader on wine allows you to get this ability.
