HowTo / Notes

Simple installation instructions

Submitting this installation guide for someone new to wine:

  1. Install Wine
  2. Install PlayonLinux
  3. Install Windows Fonts
  4. Download the latest Adobe Reader from Adobe's enterprise website (Last Tested v21.011.20039)
  5. Run the PlayonLinux Adobe Reader installer to install the software
  6. Install component riched20 (PlayOnLinux Application Configuration)
  7. Optional: Change Wine version to latest in System (PlayOnLinux Application Configuration)
XFA PDF forms

This is the only software that allows users to properly fill out XFA PDF forms. These forms are used by a lot of government agencies and other organizations. You cannot use the mobile versions of Adobe Reader to fill these forms either. You need a windows or Mac version to do this.

On Linux installing the windows Version of Adobe reader on wine allows you to get this ability.

RE: tested adobe reader 2022.003.020314 DC (french version) (latest version)

“andré” said, “I just tried the latest version of google chrome for Linux (version 111.0.5563.64 rpm package) , and it doesn't view XFA files.”

On the Chrome address bar, type chrome: //flags/ (remove the space in “: //”) and press Enter. Search for “XFA”. The search should find this “feature”:

PDF XFA support
Enables support for XFA forms in PDFs. Has no effect if Chrome was not built with XFA support. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android
#pdf-xfa-forms

Change its setting from Default to Enabled. Relaunch the browser for the change to take effect.

“andré” also said, “For testing, any recent gov't pdf should work, e.g.
forms.mgcs.gov.on.ca/dataset/2600aae9-be83-43d7-abfc-3cfb8af77b1d/resource/7a227208-13f8-4c57-b03b-9150c593a8b1/download/11018e.pdf”

The Canadian form works well in the native Windows current versions of Foxit Reader and PDF-XChange Editor. But there are no Wine maintainers and the versions tested with Wine are out-of-date. See the Wine pages for:
Foxit Reader appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4060
PDF-XChange Editor appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=15599

test date = 2023-02-13
o/s = mageia 8 (Linux)
wine = version 6.0-4.1 (32bit) (latest version on mageia 8)
playonlinux = version 4.4-1.1 (32bit)
As suggested from previous tests, installed riched20 using the lastest version of winetricks.

Installed without issue.
Loading XFA documents slow but reliable.
Have to deactivate protected mode, as that is an MSW only feature.
Documents easily modified and saved, and reloaded as needed.
Since the whole purpose of using the adobe pdf app is for XFA documents, and they are manipulated without problem, I would classify adobe reader as gold.

Thanks for the comment... I have not tried printing a PDF since I just use the browser to print directly. I am glad the XFA forms work though... only application that can fill them. They are mostly being replaced by Online forms but not everywhere yet.

How do you use the browser to print the XFA pdf ?
Are you somehow using Abobe reader to display in your browser ?
Or did I misunderstand your comment ?

I want to print the XFA pdf form, to help ensure that I filled it out properly. I work on it with another, so printing helps avoid mistakes.

Hey, so I just save the filled file and open it using google chrome to print the file. It has great support for Reading PDFs including Filled XFA pdf forms. I tried firefox but it's native PDF reader had issues back when I tested it. Hope that helps.

Harsh said, “I tried firefox but it's native PDF reader had issues back when I tested it.” There have been improvements to FF support for PDFs that Harsh may not have tested.

I just tried the latest version of google chrome for Linux (version 111.0.5563.64 rpm package) , and it doesn't view XFA files.
I installed the adobe acrobat extention, latest version 15.1.3.40, same result.
Note that this extention is not installable on Linux versions of another chromium-based application (Vivaldi).
Activating developper mode, same result.

What version and configuration of google chrome works for you ?
Are you using google chrome for msw under wine ?
Thanks for any hints.

Ohh... I'm surprised that is the case. I'm using a Google Chromebook but the version of chrome on it is basically Linux. Sorry did not realize it was not the same as Native Linux Chrome. I think the only other option for fixing your printing issues might be to use another PDF viewer. I'll try to rest some out before I make a suggestion this time so as to not send you down a wrong path. Also send me a link of a sample form you are using. Want to make sure I test with the same file.

Not to worry .. it doesn't take much difference to block a solution.

I'll try a windows browser under wine, and then installing the adobe extension.

For testing, any recent gov't pdf should work, e.g.
forms.mgcs.gov.on.ca/dataset/2600aae9-be83-43d7-abfc-3cfb8af77b1d/resource/7a227208-13f8-4c57-b03b-9150c593a8b1/download/11018e.pdf
Sticky Note

The sticky note comments work fine after installing msftedit with winetricks.
RE: Sticky Note

Hey that's super cool thanks a lot. I'm going to give this a try ASAP and then I'll update my testing notes.
RE: Sticky Note
by Harsh on Wednesday March 2nd 2022, 22:16
I'll add a note to my workarounds but I could not get it to work in my case. Maybe I do not understand how to use Winetricks.
I use PlayonLinux to install adobe acrobat.
RE: Sticky Note
by JH on Friday March 11th 2022, 23:40
I'm just using regular Wine 7.0 release. The extra libraries are installed with the command `winetricks mspatcha riched20 msftedit`. Missing text in the UI is fixed by installing Segoe UI font. And that's everything needed.

Right now the signature tool still doesn't work. It seems to be using Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) (as do other online features like log in) and CEF seems to be generally problematic in Wine (e.g. bug 44985).
RE: Sticky Note
by Harsh on Saturday March 12th 2022, 0:28
Thanks yes I tried winetricks but don't know how to target my playonlinux drive. It's okay don't use comments anyway so not a big loss. Yes I installed all MS fonts just to be safe but sego was the key.

No English Voice Available on this System

Has anyone been able to get the Read Out Loud functionality to work? Not entirely sure if there is a program to install all voices would be available
RE: No English Voice Available on this System

Sorry never used it myself...
RE: No English Voice Available on this System

I ended up getting it to work by using winetricks and installing speechdk. (for anyone else that may want to know)

Sorry, its speechsdk.
Above method failed repeatedly but POL script worked for me. Ubuntu 20.04 w/Cinnamon
by Ralph Wigzell on Sunday February 7th 2021, 0:24
I tried the above method and other methods umpteen times without success (I probably had some incorrect settings which I couldn't identify), but the following method worked with version 2015.010.20056 (requires PlayOnLinux)
My OS is Ubuntu 20.04 w/Cinnamon

1. Goto webpage www.playonlinux.com/en/app-2653-Adobe_Acrobat_Reader_DC.html
2. Click on "Source code" in the first (latest) post.
3. Copy the code to Text Editor or Gedit.
4. Save it as Adobe_Reader_DC.sh and then make it executable in the file properties window. (I saved mine in PlayOnLinux's virtual drives folder)
6. Run PlayOnLinux
7. Make sure Wine version 4.0.3 is available in the Tools>>> Manage Wine versions (I installed both 386 and X64)
8. Goto Tools>>> Run a local script, find your script and run it. It will install Adobe Reader, just click on yes, next, etc to all dialogs. It will also offer to install Mono, you should accept this.
9. Once the installation is complete you must download and install Windows fonts to usr/shared/fonts if you don't have them already.
10. Download the zip file to your downloads folder, I used this link : www.w7df.com/p/windows-7.html
11. Extract the file and copy it as is to usr/shared/font using Nautilus as superuser. To do so, type "sudo nautilus" in a terminal.
12. You should now find Adobe Acrobat Reader DC in your menu and it should work as described above.
RE: Above method failed repeatedly but POL script worked for me. Ubuntu 20.04 w/Cinnamon
by Harsh on Tuesday February 9th 2021, 15:29
Sorry the above method did not work and thanks for posting the Steps for others. I have also updated the installation method since it is now very simple to install but requires a specific version of Adobe Reader DC. Out of curiosity which version of Adobe Reader did you install using your method.
RE: Above method failed repeatedly but POL script worked for me. Ubuntu 20.04 w/Cinnamon
by Ralph Wigzell on Wednesday February 10th 2021, 14:09
The version is 2015.010.20056

I have tried your latest method with AcroRdrDC1901020099_en_US.exe but I must have the wrong settings in PlayOnLinux as it fails to install.
err:wineboot:start_services_process Unexpected termination of services.exe - exit code -1073741819

I found that by deleting the Adobe Updater Service in the registry using "regedit" eliminated this issue which was created for all "wine" applications.
Fix installation
by Carlos Salvador Pérez Salgado on Wednesday April 15th 2020, 23:04
Hi, this is not my work but it could help you. I took ir from Elleni's comment at forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1096616-start-0.html:

I could successfully install Acrobat Reader through wine as following:

winetricks atmlib
winetricks riched20
winetricks wsh57
winetricks mspatcha

Get the Windows 7 fonts, especially the sego* fonts.

for ex. from here www.w7df.com/7/download.html

Copy the them in /usr/share/fonts
execute command in a terminal:

sudo fc-cache -vf

After successful installation, at start up, select "always start with protected mode disabled" (not possible in wine)

Found solution here: askubuntu.com/questions/1069103/missing-fonts-in-acrobat-reader-in-wine
RE: Fix installation
by albert on Sunday February 14th 2021, 11:54
Just to say that this worked fine for me with Linux Mint 20.1, Wine 5 (with winetricks) and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC 2021.001.20135 (32 bits). Using the askubuntu solution link.

Thanks!
Installed Adobe Acrobat pro latest version on ubuntu 18.04.4 64 bit using wine 5.0
by Satpal on Sunday March 29th 2020, 1:12
Install Adobe Acrobat pro following your instructions. All went well . But I have to install windows 7 font pack to make visible all the tools and fonts of the adobe. I have to use adobe acrobat in order to open and fill XFA forms of Canadian government .

A big thank you . You saved my day.
