What works

  • Opening PDFs and Viewing them
  • Filling and Saving PDF forms including XFA PDF forms (Forms typically downloaded form government websites)
  • Stamps tool and Comments tools like highlight/underline/textbox etc. (Sticky notes do not work)
  • Typing on simple PDFs using the form fill tool (Signatures do not work),

What does not

  1. Issues initially with opening PDF files (See workaround for Fix)
  2. Signatures in the form fill tool do not work
  3. Sticky in the comments tool
  4. Printing does not seem to work either

Workarounds

For the first issue of opening PDF files installing riched20 with winetricks fixes the issue.

For Signatures or Comments not working a worked around would be to use adobe reader on a mobile device.

For printing not work you can just use a browser to print.

Note: Some people say that msftedit with winetricks will fix the comments but I personally could not make it work with my PlayOnLinux installation.

Additional Comments

I tested the latest version of Adobe PDF 22.003.20263 and it works pretty well.

The primary reason for gold rating is simple. The core functions of reading/filling a PDF works perfectly. Also this is the only tool that can be used to fill XFA PDF forms. And it does a fantastic Job at that.

HowTo / Notes

Simple installation instructions

Submitting this installation guide for someone new to wine:

  1. Install Wine
  2. Install PlayonLinux
  3. Install Windows Fonts
  4. Download the latest Adobe Reader from Adobe's enterprise website (Last Tested v21.011.20039)
  5. Run the PlayonLinux Adobe Reader installer to install the software
  6. Install component riched20 (PlayOnLinux Application Configuration)
  7. Optional: Change Wine version to latest in System (PlayOnLinux Application Configuration)
XFA PDF forms

This is the only software that allows users to properly fill out XFA PDF forms. These forms are used by a lot of government agencies and other organizations. You cannot use the mobile versions of Adobe Reader to fill these forms either. You need a windows or Mac version to do this.

On Linux installing the windows Version of Adobe reader on wine allows you to get this ability.
