The latest version, on Steam or from CD, with or without DLC.
and everything else works pretty much like on Windows. The only problem that comes out of the box is a graphical glitch that affects candles and other flames. It only exists when using Wine's default Direct3D implementation; installing DXVK manages that issue.
For those who have the Russian version of the game (maybe on old CDs):
By default, the Professor's lab (contains the actual levels) fails to load. This happens because the game tries to open it by its filepath hardcoded in CP1251 or some other encoding. A workaround is to open the "data/labs" directory in the game's Program Files folder and rename the existing files so their names are in English. After that, select the lab in the main menu, and you're good to go.
What does not
Graphical glitches (not obstructive to the gameplay), chararcter encoding problems in Russian version
DXVK was installed and used instead of the default Direct3D implementation. For Russian version, the default experiments lab was given another filename.
What was not tested
Late levels of the game

There are 2 Versions available. The new version/CD has a copy protection. So please buy an old version. Sadly the vendor don't write this on the package of the new CD. Even the ISBN is still the same as the old one.
